I tried it 2 weeks ago and had the same outlook problem and contatced
them. Apparently my PST file on outlook??!?! (whatever that is) was
corrupted by an old virus attack I had in May. Thye emailed me
yesterday to try the current one that has some ability to deal with
corrupt psts and it worked. I left in on overnight and this morning it
runs fine and doesn't affectthe machine at all. Iguess it needs
overnight to catch up on my 45000 emails..most of them full of utter
    rubbish!

Is XP any different to Windows 2000, other than the Fisher-Price front
    end?

    I'm I being unnecessarily luddite-ish installing W2K over XP on a new
    machine?

Supposedly more robust but you need a more powerful machine to get the
    most from it.
Check you can get drivers. I tried to do that on my parent's new Dell
and found that there were only XP drivers available for a couple of
    bits of hardware.

I think I'd go with XP and choose the classic UI on a new machine now.

With a couple of bits of hardware I've used XP drivers on W2K machines
    with no ill effects.

And if it's XP Pro (rather than noddy Home) it comes with Remote
Desktop support as standard. All XP versions support real multi-user
stuff (log off and leave your progs running, kind of thing)
I've just put 2K Server on a brand new Dell that came with XP Home
and managed to get all the necessary drivers from the Dell web site [1]

Next time I'd probably go with XP Pro.

I forgot to download them *before* wiping the machine, of course.
