I'm getting stabbing pains in my shoulder when I raise my arm, I've just
checked and there isnt' a knife stuck in it, so it must be something
    else.

Pissing me off it is, ibuprofen time I think.

Yep, that sounds about right, my colleague in work has been off for the
past three days with a stiff neck (couldn't get out of bed).
TBH one of the most effective anti-inflammatory drugs available is still
aspirin, just make sure that you have eaten before hand. Two aspirin
and two paracetamol will sort you out, if they don't go and see the doc.

    Hmm... It's not that then.

You'd better get to hospital for a full CAT scan, cold enema and
    traction.

Unless you want a second opinion?

Or when it's painful enough to keep you awake for days, then that other
    anti-inflammatory works wonders. I can't remember what it's called,
although I use it for my random trapped nerves. Pip will be along
shortly to tell you what it's called.

Frozen shoulder sounds more likely. Do you get pins and needles in your
    fingertips?

Have you been doing anything to bring this on?

No more than the usual carpal tunnel twinges.
Can't think of anything, I went to reach something off the shelf earlier
and it went STABBY STABBY STAB! seems to hurt since then, but if I
ignore the pain I've still got full movement.

Hopefully it'll go away if I carry on ignoring it, if not I'll pretend
    it's French.

Is the pain in the muscle that lifts the arm?

I've had trapped nerve stuff: I get a crawly feeling on the left upper back,
occasionally tingly fingertips. I do a couple of neck exercises, relax, and
    it clears. No sharp pains.
....but for this pain, the drugs might work.

Not so good if you have a morphine allergy, as I do. Voltarol fucked me
right up for weeks after I dropped the shutter on my head.
