I tend to as well, but only because when I say (for example) 'I used to
ride round the M25' I could see people phrasing the question 'That's a
    long way isn't it?'

Bollocks. I've almost never used the term "motorcycle", and almost
always "motorbike", or just "bike" of course.

The French have a word for it: Moto not Velo.
    Not forgetting in the US.

[as Charlie steps outside the Tea House, three college students follow
him - Charlie starts to get on his motorcycle]
College boy in gray sweater: Is that your sickle?
Charlie Rogers: You ought to stop reading those hot rod magazines,
buddy. Sickle is out, it's either a bike or a motorcycle.

What he says. 'Motorbike' if I need to make it clear I'm not talking
about pushbikes, otherwise just 'bike'. 'Motorcycle' takes more effort
to say or type so I don't use it.

Me too, so perhaps it's a Derbyshire dialect thing. Motorcycle just
    sounds slightly odd to me.

Vespa. Or as another regular to RMH has often said. You should get a
    Miata.

I am still trying (without success) to make sense out of your posting.

Say for the sake of argument that the 2010 Suzuki V-Strom DL650
is the perfect bike for you in every respect... except that the 2009
DL650 is virtually identical... so the 2010 isn't really a "new"
    model...(?)...so you won't buy one...(???)

Then I would suggest the Honda VT750RS, where "RS" stands for
"resembles a Sportster" -- or "retro standard" (take your pick).

It's a "new model", ie nothing exactly like it has ever been
on the market since the Big Bang, although it's still a Honda Shadow,
so maybe it really isn't a new model. You decide.
What is this, school? When is this assignment due, and what percentage
of our final grade does it count for?

ps. Whatever made you think that asking the Ozzies would do you
any good, when everyone knows they're a pack of daft buggers
    who ride like Mad Max.

I only called it a "motorbike" when I rode a Harley full dresser.

In that case, "motorbrick" would be more apropos.

It was surprisingly nimble for its size and weight.
Something like hippos and elephants dancing ballet

Would someone please translate "Whoooossh" into the Queen's English?

(Or did the Queen herself use this word on appropriate occasions,
such as Princess Diana's 1995 BBC Panorama interview -- in that case,
what would be the closest North American equivalent?)
