What can possibly go wrong ......

  1. I am about to drive many miles in order to part with some drinking
vouchers and collect an LE Velo Mk3 which is claimed to be in good
    riding order but oilyrag condition.

No laughter please, I know that speeding tickets are unlikely to be an
issue, I happen to like the look of these somewhat quirky machines.
The good news is that Mister plod loved them for many years for their
    silent running, economy and reliability.

What disasters are about to befall me ?

I always thought they looked cute...

Anyway, I suspect the biggest risk is boredom, unless a B-road route
    home can be found.

My Bantam was great except on the roads that the grown-ups used

and even then it seized, caught fire or fell to bits . . . . . .

  4. Last time I rode anything as slow as that was when I borrowed my sister's
moped to get to work in about 1980. It was thoroughly dangerous as I was
riding down narrow country roads and there were a few lorries also using
said roads, lorry drivers do not give small vehicles enough space.

This is not an issue if you ride something *faster* than a lorry.

Small, slow vehicles are very vulnerable. Small fast vehicles are much
safer IMHO. My insurance company unaccountably does not seem to agree with
    this opinion.

  5. Methinks you exagerate a little.
A properly fettled LE should do about 50 mph, whereas a classic moped
struggled to make 30. Certainly not fast for 200cc, probably more in
line with what should be expected of a 125.
In its time (a 1940s design which survived into the 60s) it was at the
premium end of the workers commute market.

I am not a speed freak, I use a bike in preference to the bus pass.
My main bike is a modern GS500 which may lack street cred but has has
more performance than I can reasonably handle before the slipstream
tries to pull my head off.

  9. The LE is actually a nice little machine. Father had a few for commuting to
    work.

Did he have them spaced out along the route so that when one broke
down, it wasn't too far to walk to the next one?

I always find this surprising. I have an unfaired Guzzi which I tend to
ride quite quickly and have no problems with windblast and prolonged
    riding.

It may also be worth mentioning I'm not exactly Mr. Apollo [1].
