    An SV may be on the cards if it goes. I reckon out of the proceeds on
    the sale I could spend 2.5k on another bike and live off the other 3k
    until I sort out work.

    But, then, there's a lot of bikes I could get for 2.5k.

    It's a possibility. To be honest, if I lose the Thou then I'll be
    happy with anything just so I've got a bike.

    First plan is not to lose the Thou.

    <1976 to 1984>
    Yamaha FSIE (70's 'sports' moped for those too young to know!)
    Triumph Trophy 250 (shares engine and chassis with BSA Starfire - max engine
    size for a 17yr old back in 1977!)
    BSA 650 Star (single carb unit 650 - passed test so went for a bigger bike)
    BSA 650 Lightening (twin carb model of above - 650 Star had a rumble from
    the crank so traded up to Lightening)
    Triumph 750 Bonneville (T140V) - Hi Tech for 1979, with front disk brake!
    Triumph 750 Trident (T150) - Bad move, Triumph's triple was not very
    reliable and ended up sold as a "project"
    BSA 350 (B40) - ex military workhorse, ex g/f ended up with it
    Panther 600 ('Sloper' single) - with sidecar - the dog loved it!
    BSA 250 (C15) - built from a few boxes of bits - ex-wife ended up with that
    one!

    <18 yr gap>

    <2002 to present>
    Ducati 900 ST2 - (2valve V-Twin, lots of torque and good fun) - seemed
    amazing after the bikes of yesteryear!
    Ducati 996 ST4S - (996 4 valve Engined Sports Tourer, with the emphasis on
    'sports') - amazing engine and chassis, but a bit 'frantic' at times,
    depending on the gearing (they changed it for later models, which helps to
    keep the front wheel on the floor!)
    Ducati 749S - current steed, only 800 miles from new and waiting for the
    salt to wash away. It's Italian so it'll fall to bits if it smells salt! :)

    well .. you did ask

    Why would it do that? My old Guzzi doesn't seem to mind.

    Hi Simon, it was a flippant comment really. I rode the ST4S occassionally
    through the previous winter and to be honest it didn't look anywhere near as
    good after as it did before. The alloy tends to fur up and bolt heads go
    manky. The ST2 had been ridden through a winter by the provious owner, and
    that was in a bad state when you started to really look. Exposed wheel
    bearings, for example, don't help in bad weather and they were falling to
    bits.

    So, having spent more than is wise on a bike with 749S now it's not getting
    a wiff of salty roads!

    In my youth ( and when I had no other transport!) I rode the old brits
    through some pretty bad winters. Lots of snow back in the 70's, even on the
    south coast where I lived then. I used to do a 15 mile trek through town to
    work on the Bonnie and I remember sliding it down the road in the snow with
    a silencer disappearing into the slush on the opposite side of the road!
    Thank god for cars ... and global warming! ;-)
    <another flippant comment ... no flames required!>

    Cheers
    Henry

    Forgot the TDM 850 - owned for > 2 years, dropped twice, once hitting

    1994: Ancient Puch Maxi - never ran more than a mile as it was fucked.
    Dumped in a skip in 1995.
    1997: L-reg SR125 - learner bike bought from Duncan Lovett formerly of
    this parish, passed test on it[1]. Dropped many times, little crash
    once when fuckwit didn't give way at a junction. Sold to another
    learner in 1998.
    1998: J-reg SR250 - first post test bike, never dropped or crashed.
    Bit slow for my (then) commute. Still got it, in bits at present,
    should be resurrected this year. It will be a bit faster and handle a
    bit better after rebuild.[2]
    1998 S-reg GPZ500S - lovely bike, almost new, never really confident
    on it. Often dropped, little crash due to corner mismanagement. Now
    going to stepson for his 18th birthday.
    2001 J-reg XV535 Virago - fine bike but too heavy for increasingly
    weak shoulder. Sold to Kevin Olley of this parish in 2003.

    [1]Passed driving test in 1973; bit of a gap there then.
    [2]Think small values of 'a bit'.
