What are Play up to?

As they've started doing books as well as DVDs and games I ordered some
reading stock from them last week.

I ordered two books and "Sims 2" on 28th October and "Pretty Straight Guys"
    on 31st.

The copy of the Sims turned up on Monday, the first two books appeared
yesterday, but were delivered via DHL rather than through the post. "Pretty
straight guys", which is listed as in stock and dispatched in 24 hours, has
    been "packing" since 31st October.

So, what are they up to, eh?

  3. I gave up on them after I pre-ordered C&C Generals+Expansion pack and on
the day it was due to be released they moved the release date forward 7
days, then did it again the next week, and again the next week, by this
time it had been out in the shops from the original date, I had to
cancel the order and buy locally.

After posting this I thought that maybe I'd be better off e-mailing Play,
    rather than asking ukrm.

So I e-mailed them and asked them to look into it and, 5 minutes ago, my
copy of "Pretty Straight Guys" dropped through the letterbox.

So from my complaint to them having the book with me was 30 minutes, now
    _that's_ impressive customer service :)

top tip: don't read that if you're already angry.

Well I'm not angry at the moment, but I've just started on Simon Singh's
"Big Bang" which will take me a couple of days to read[1].

If I'm feeling angry then I'll read "Well of lost plots" rather than "Pretty
    Straight Guys", eh?

[1] So Tallbloke will just have to wait until then to read it.

good plan. I was reading it on the train a month or so ago, and noticed
a few people giving me funny looks - I then realised I was muttering
"fucking cunts...fucking cunts..." over and over again, just about
    audibly.

  8. Hmm, well as it's the second book I've bought on the strength of a
recommendation on here I'll give it a go[1]. Should get my Amazon copy
tomorrow or Monday. Maybe I won't read it after work though.

[1] The other one being The Big Show.

The British version is ~500 pages long, but it explores controversial new
thinking in science, such as the theory that the universe may not have been
    created as stated in genesis.

It also provides detailed information on science which may be useful to
terrorists ... things like how to work out the size of the Earth, which
would be essential if you were building, say, a guided missile.

Your government is probably working hard to expunge or rewrite these
sections, along with all of the bits that use mathematics or suggest that
non-Americans may have made scientific discoveries.

I'm sure that, because of the anticipation, you'll enjoy your pamphlet all
    the more when it arrives.

    That *is* impressive.

I always used to allow up to a week for delivery from Play. Recently
I've usually got stuff in three days.

I bought a book from them on Monday last week (in a late night/early
morning purchasing session). It was delivered on the Wednesday
morning. A "real world" 24 hours delivery which wasn't bad I thought.

They didn't respond to my e-mail, so I went out to the site to have a look
at my order status and it has changed to "Posted 4/11/04", so I fully expect
another copy of the book to arrive early next week.

Maybe I'll send it to Muddycat.

If you want impressive ineptitude, take out a subscription to
Practical Photography and then ring them and vaguely ask a question
about it. So far they've extended my subscription, twice, and showered
me with so many gifts it's becoming hard to get in the house.

    .... I've got their number on speed-dial.

    <SNIP, "Big Bang"
If anybody asks just say you wanted it for the next book-burning night.

As an aside, has anybody noticed on the news that our war against terror has
led to some unusual criminal charges being mention on telly?

There was a thing last week about a guy who was being charged with
"Possession of materials of use to a terrorist" and one a few months ago
about somebody charged with "Possession of chemicals". These have led me to
wonder if anybody, anywhere, ever has not been in possession of chemicals or
materials of use to a terrorist.

It's available on Amazon UK and I'm placing an order for some stuff
shortly, shall I add it and send it down?

Note that it's not available in the US yet, but is 40% off in the UK.
You can also wind Amazon up by ordering a heavy book over
international post :) (and maybe help get them to change their ****
awful "one price sends all" mailing policy). Reviews and UK links
here, including an out-take about the much maligned Ralph Alpher (eat
