What am I obliged to tell the police?

  1. To cut a long story short, I got a ticket today because I forgot to
remove the bag I put on my plate and not nobbled near Holborn Circus.

Anyway, my point is, what do I actually have to tell the police? I know
when I'm under caution I'm not obliged to say anything blah, blah but is
it the same when they ask how long I've been working for my company,
what was my previous address and can I prove it yada, yada.

I gave them my name and address and had no other form of ID apart from a
card our company issues because of trub with the Yanks at their embassy.
It was only when they raised their game I remembered I had a pay slip in
    my pocket.

What a bunch of cunts. I mean, sorry for any job that might be reading
this but it seems that being nice and polite gets you telling off and a
    ticket.

So, what exactly am I obliged to tell the police?

I thought it was name, address perhaps where I was born and that's it.
Every time I get stopped I vow never to volunteer information but I
always end up doing it. The problem today was that they couldn't
substantiate my name and address and the company owns hundreds of
vehicles so I could've been telling porkies (I wasn't) and I even heard
the woman call me a liar.

Flippin' police with not much else to do.

    Rant over.

If you have commited an offence for which they could summons you , then you
need to provide them with enough information to prove to their satisfaction
that you are who you say you are , and that you have provided a suitable
    address for service of summons.

The fact that they were only going to ticket you in this instance doesn't
make any difference to the above.

If you can't convince them of who you are then they can arrest you under
section 25 of PACE for as long as it takes them to find out who you are.
If you still refuse to tell them then you are kept in and dumped in front of
    the magistrates next day.

  3. This one was a ****. Make no mistake. Right from the off.
I don't have a problem with the police and what they do. I admit I'm
probably over qualified, but I'd never do it, despite dreams of doing so
    ;-)
Exactly. That's why I wanted to know what the very least I had to tell
    them was.

I got a ticket the other week for a traffic light offence but the two I
spoke to were alright and I respected them as fellow humans.
