Who the hell to you think you are "Gerry" making comments like "one less
    idiot on a bike"

This poor bastard had a family - you do not know the facts - don't pretend
you do by getting third hand information and making a judgement call on it.

If he wants to have fun then let him and all the others. You obviously get
your kicks by dishing out your own brand of advice.

What motorcycling needs is a lot less small dicks like you riding your pussy
bikes and making stupid comments like this.

How about you front up to his family and say this.

We all make mistakes and he has paid the ultimate price.

I hope he is in peace and his family gets some sanity from knowing the
motorcycling community is behind them as one.

I read he was from MCA - they are one of the best custom motorcycle shops in
town and I am sure this guy has some friends that woudl like to get hold of
you and tell you the facts of life.

Grow up - get a life and stop making inconsiderate and stupid comments.

Great response there Johnnie! Witty and insightful, adding much to the
    debate. Paulh would be proud.

He actually said something to the effect of "if his death serves to make one
less idiot on a bike, then his death was not in vain" in response to the
person who said a whole group of learner bikers rode past and saw him dead.
I believe he was saying that by seeing this guy, perhaps the learners would
be a little more cautious. Way to jump to a nutty conclusion though.

and my point was nothing would make a death useful, or not in vain. It's
sort of like when a journalist says "untimely death"

mebbe I was a bit harsh on Gerry

Maybe we're all being a bit harsh.

I don't think anyone could suggest any lesson on the road is worth someone
dying, regardless of what he was doing. It also doesn't matter if he was on
    a Fatboy or a CT110.

Lessons I'll be taking from this thread:
    1. Not jump to conclusions on 3rd hand info.
    2. The rider who is most danger to you is yourself.
    3. When we do lose a rider (and its happening too much lately) we should
treat him/her, and his family/friends with some respect. To me that means
learning something about the person, and have a think about what happened
and how you could avoid the same thing. Like Conehead's mate the other day
in the acco with the dog. That was respect. Whats happening about this
Marsfield bloke is degenerating into a gossipy sewing circle.

And thats my opinion. Don't like it, send me your address and you get a free
    kikindanuts.

Over on the aviation group, we have a pretty hard and fast
rule: "Hold the heresay and second guessing, and wait for the
official report to come out". You always get someone who
wants to gossip, but it generally works pretty well.

Stops a good story from getting in the way of the facts too.

  11. Just what I thought, MCA a "custom" motorbike shop? Just a plain old
accessories shop that happens to sell a bit of Harley gear.

I was thinking I might have known Dave, there was a Dave that used to work
at Liverpool MCA and did move to the Sydney shop years ago. He didn't seem
like the type that would have ridden into a bus though.

Touche. Unwitting though? I don't think so. Inciting you into granting us
mortals a gift of your rhetorical prose would seem to be one of the
objectives of the post, in which case its Mission Accomplished! :)

Which might work well in an industry where all accidents are pretty thoroughly
investigated and the results of investigations published, and if I recall
correctly, a copy is posted to all licenced pilots (or is it just those on the
mailing list who want to receive that stuff)... not really feasible in
relation to motor vehicle accidents, which are questionably investigated and
coroners reports are rarely publicly reported.

It doesn't work quite like that, distribution wise, but for the most
part, yes, you're right: Aviation accidents get investigated, road
    ones do not.

That wasn't my point though (maybe I'm being excessivly obscure
again!). Regardess of whether it's a bike, a car, or an aeroplane,
second guessing, hypothesising or otherwise presenting random and
unverifiable guesses as some sort of fact don't help anyone.

Family, friends and fiancee of the folks involved are entirely
likely to see stuff that gets written here. Have a heart.

  16. Nah, you weren't.

His comments remind me of what you'll hear from the jarheads whenever
someone points out that there seem to be an awful lot of young recruits
    ending up swinging from trees...

"You see, they were weak, and their weakness could've put their comrades in
danger in battle in the future. It's better that they die now than 10 die
    later."

In his usual endearing circling-buzzard way, Gerry made it apparent that
he's perfectly happy to trade this bloke's life for the_possibility_that
we_might_end up with just_one_less hoon on the roads at some point in the
    future.
    (pounding lectern now)
Budding inconsiderate road users are such a looming menace that we must not
flinch from sacrificing lives if that's what it'll take to oppose it.

Ironic, nay, borderline hilarious, when you consider that a lot of his
undeniable issues stem from having his own life once considered similarly
cheap relative to an overblown threat...

im not sure you guys understand it yet. The guy had already carked it, hes
dead. If I was a learner riding past seeing the grisley scene, I very much
doubt i would pay no attention. It would make me realise, perhaps
redundantly, that riding a bike can be dangerous. Stun me back from taking
it for granted. Im not sure how this sentiment equates with having no
    respect for human life.
