This is in danger of turning into another "who's got the greatest
number of bhp/litres/wheels" type thread. I'll see your Suzuki Jeep
(ha!) & raise you a Suzuki SJ (oh), proper Jeep, Corvette, &
technically a BMW 1602 (although I haven't seen it for a couple of
decades & don't know if the ground's swallowed it up).

    So that's 3 & a bit cars & 3 & a bit bikes (I won't count the Fantic as
a whole bike as kennyboi says it doesn't exist & he's always right).

What's the problem?. It's only going to affect London tossers after all.

Most of the blokes I know have more than one car. I've got a Honda and a
Laguna Estate (for those carrying times) and even the Boy chic has two.
I've got about 25 RC helicopter, do they count? :)
You could always move to a more parky area.

TOG@toil, , banged the rocks together and
    they said :
Me. But only because just before Christmas is a really bad time to flog
the Volvo on EBay, and I need to get an error message reset by the
garage, and I really hate selling things.

    3 cars and two bikes.

  6. They will be the new Volvo ones - they make a horrendous roaring noise
    under certain conditions.

  8. [bike parking proposal from City of Westminster]
As I am not resident in City of Westminster it's a bit fucking
impossible to do so. This is a money making exercise carried out
against people who very largely do not live in the Borough [1].

[1] a guess on my part but probably a reasonable one.

  9. Sorry - I thought Camden had switched power as have Hammersmith & Fulham
    and Ealing IIRC.

  10. Possibly. He's got to be a bit careful over policy issues from now on as
the next Mayoral election is 2008 IIRC.
The whole policy on the railways is so bloody confused that the
government are going to come very badly unstuck. On the one hand they
preach about the environment and say they wish to grow the railway. On
the other they have negotiated ludicrous franchise agreements that
provide huge premium payments which can only be financed by cuts in
services and also massive fares increases and changes to fare conditions
that they have secretly sanctioned. The operators are then forced to
run these ludicrous timetables and implement the fares increases and
take the flack for what is another form of revenue raising by
    government.

The problem is that while the big transport groups might have wanted to
run rail franchises in the past I think the risks are now getting too
great. Reputationally some of these groups are at increased risk of
looking utterly awful in the eyes of the public and their shareholders.
At some point something is going to give - we have had GNER collapse,
First Group are under unrelenting attack over the new Great Western
timetables and shite performance and there is a massive scrap looming
over the Cross Country franchise. I think the government may have
bitten off more than they chew with that one as their plans are bonkers
and of course this is currently a Virgin franchise. Dear old Mr Branson
might well make himself look an arse at times (where he benefits) but
I'd not want to try to put him in the role of DfT patsy if he wins Cross
Country and it becomes a disaster area.

I agree it is all mad - something like an accident is going to happen
under the DfT's watch and ministers and civil servants will be in the
direct firing line. They won't know what has hit them if the current
sources of opposition and complaint join forces in concerted criticism.

Heh, doubt it. Lots of wheels, not much horsepower - the three motahs
barely make 3 litres between them and not a lot of HP. Bikes, well,
    DR-Z400supamota, Commando 850, Triumph 500, Morini 350 and her SR125
what is about to get sold and thus create a Garage vacuum for old other
old unpoweful shite. I've got a really hankering for a Panther M100.
    Dunno why....

Kennyboi doesn't seem to exist either - hasn't been infesting any of
the usual places since November. Speculation seems to be that he's
    either dead or inside...

Indeed, and few bike manufacturers have been doing anything about it
either because the buying public doesn't give a flying monkey's.
    TEWI? Have I met her?
Sir overlooked the bit about IR mileage rates - I was speaking from the
point of view of my EKS company. After the latest rise in fares, my
monthly ticket is now ~450quid[1] plus another 60 quid for parking at
the station. So that's 510quid plus the mileage to the station and
    back(another 40-50 quid). Call it 550.

    On the bike, it's 120mx20 = 2400m in a "full" month, so that's 576
quid, but the roundtrip is a little less than 120m so it's, well, erm,
pretty much equal. Oops. And that's of course assuming that I don't
have to pay for parking or the congestion charge.

That said, the cost I feel in my pocket is greater for the train on
account of the additional taxed income I'm spending on reading
material. About half of the money for bike travel will have to go
towards petrol as Sochiro's finest are thirsty buggers but the rest
more than covers maintenance (mostly done by me), tyres and leaves a
little against the purchase of the bike, too.

[1] So I'm a capitalist **** and travel first class because I need the
    space for my laptop.

  19. Total Equivalent Warming Impact

The total greenhouse effect of anything. In this case, for vehicles,
including the energy expended in mining and processing the metal, in
synthesising the plastics, making the glass, etc etc, construction,
transporting it from factory to market, plus what it emits in its
working life, and what it costs in greenhouse gases to scrap it.

Bikes do surprisingly well here. Not a lot of raw materials, remarkably
long service life (if they're not pranged) so those raw materials serve
a nice long time, and easy and cheap to dispose of.

The one bugbear is emissions in use.

Because they'll be able to eventually make all bays payable just like
cars are. I can see an end coming to free parking in all of London, not
    just Westminster.

    <Think>

Come to think of it, why should they stop there?

    Cunts.
