I think I'm in the running here: parked next to a Daewoo on the
street. Heat softened the asphalt and the bike ended up leaning on
the hood of the car when I returned for it twenty minutes later.

Damage to the bike: $0. Damages paid out by my liability insurer
    $1000+.

No. Their responsibility is to compensate me for the injuries they
cause me by their negligence. That's not quite the same thing. I'd
rather remain uninjured, and will do what I consider prudent to obtain
that end, whether or not the other drivers live up to their
    responsibilities.
You probably would if you thought it would prevent injuries that would
occur if you didn't. I don't take every precaution that any
contributor here might suggest either, but they're useful to think
    about.

    ummm, NO.

Chicks dig scars from COOL things with amazing stories attached. Not
from falling off your bike on the street.

"There I was, running in SECOND in the seniors division at the Isle of
MAN, when a stray child ran across the road/track, I took the only
honorable path, saved the childs life, but slid along the wall with the
remains of my bike for over 200 feet. I was given a medal for
    Valor...."

    THAT is cool scars.

"I fell down because I did not know what I was doing, and was wearing
    crap riding gear"

THAT is dumbass scars and Adam Wade-esque self-induced drama.

Save yourself from a life of idiocy, buy good gear, learn to ride, get
proper insurance. If you can't 'afford' it, wait to ride.

Jim, how many times do you have to be told?

It has nothing to do with the heated grips and everything to do with the fact
that you are sitting on the bike facing backwards.

When you ride it that way, you have to apply the front brake HARD to do a
    wheelie...

Paying attention?! On Reeky and ba.motorcycles?!

Whatcha think I am? A masochist or summit?

For a learner, constructive criticism on a virtual forum has its limitations.

And from what I have read, he has done exactly that.

So, if you crash your bike, it's quite OK for people to give you a lot of grief
    over it, huh?

Hey, that's gonna help a lot!

However, we tend to find that a bit of *constructive* analysis and criticism
(hey, we even have a crash assessment sheet people can use to learn from their
crash and avoid repeating it) is a darn sight more helpful than just abusing the
    hapless downed rider.

Dunno if that counts, since you didn't avoid grievous bodily harm by
    sheer dumb luck.

Then there was the time that a Geo changed lanes into me... I swerved to
avoid it, but when I reached the edge of the lane I stuck my knee out,
into the car. I left a dent down the entire length of the car and
    knocked off the rear-view mirror.

I almost broke a blinker. It was hanging cock-eyed but not detached.

But nowhere NEAR as much fun!

Fortunately, those who crash can get both the criticism and the abuse
    here, aint Reeky wunnerful? ;-)

  11. Initially their responsibility is to obey the laws of the road, which
may involve yielding the right of way to others. If they fail in that
responsibility they must provide compensation. How can they be
considered negligent if they had no responsibility in the first place?
There are drivers out there that will not see you no matter how what
you do. There are also drivers that see you, but choose to ignore
you. When you have allowed for those groups, it no longer matters if
someone might have seen you had you been wearing day-glo orange. You
actively avoid any chance of collision, whether they have seen you or
not. This works. In 35 years of street riding I have never tangled
with another vehicle. Done correctly you don't even have to worry
about braking hard. You have already anticipated that they could do
the worst possible thing, and taken measures avoid the situation.

    Three years.
This is my second relatively serious accident and the first time I have
    been injured.

There were a couple other times when I target fixated and ran off the road
    at low speed.
Not since leaving the East Coast. No multi-vehicle car accidents that were
my fault, though again, I ran off the road occasionally.

I'm not much of a motorcyclist, but my driving even scares me. That's a
main part of the reason I don't drive anymore.
I had a pillion at the time of the accident in question.

I rode for quite some time bofer I would let anyone come with.

And I still welcome any suggestions as to how I could and should have
avoided that accident. I am not implying that it was unavoidable, but I do
beleive that it would have been a relatively difficult one to get out of.
And if I really minded, I wouldn't have posted about the accident.

You said yourself that you might have been able to accellerate and clear
the road sooner. Beyond that, a better sense of traffic and hazzard
identification would have helped. I've only ridden with you in traffic a
few times, but I remember you riding what I felt was rather aggressive
for city streets, especially 2-up. (Of course, I was on a K75 at the
time which may have given my impression bias.)

Without having been there and without knowing the street in question,
it's hard for anyone to provide specific steps that could have been
taken. In general though, know traffic, know your escapes, and leave
plenty of room are all good advice.

Oh, the abuse is still attention, I just find the learning bit even better.

Mind you, the only reason the criticism gets me at all at the moment is
that I only need look as far as my leg to see that there might be some
    validity to it.

But don't worry, I'll be back to foolishly blowing off abuse (and
    constructive criticism) in no time.

I'm glad that most bad drivers don't switch to motorcycles.
