Just received a card through the door from the DVLA telling them that
they're graciously granting me another 5 working days to tax my car.

Thing is, the tax doesn't actually expire until the 31st December...

Obviously some computer cockup, someone entered 11 in one of their
spreadsheets instead of 12 or something.

Obviously, ignore it. Or post it to a consumer programme for a bit of light
relief... (shame That's Life isn't on anymore)

Are they not just saying that you'll get 5 days' grace at the end of
December, to make up for the christmas shutdown?

Actually, reading it more closely it basically says you can now
display your expired disc for 5 working days after it expires as long
as you've applied for a new one. I guess it's because you don't
actually have to buy tax until the last day of the expiring disc, and
then they'd need to post the new one to you.

Formalisation of the old "tax in the post".
