Well, that was lucky...

    198 miles in three hours. And when I parked up at the end I found that
    some time in the last 140 miles (i.e. since I filled up) one of the
    panniers had come adrift at the top, and was only hanging on by the
    slide-on bottom mounting.

    Could have been a touch expensive, that.

    lived and didn't distribute my shreddies along the M6 so it's all good,

    Good grief. They'd have had to close the M6, and get a fleet of fire
    engines to the scene, with full chemical clean up capability.
