Well, I'm shocked.

Really? I have a Discovery with a heated windscreen, and thinking back
they were probably owned by Ford when it was made. But surely they'd
license the tech for other manufacturers anyway?

It is, as you say, bloody good.

Mine wasn't crude. The Triplex one I bought in ~1985 and the factory fitted Ford one in ~1990
had a similar pattern of fine wires. And Triplex would have made one to fit any car
for which they made laminated windscreens. All you had to do was ask.

    You too, huh?

God bless the waiters in the Curry garden in Rushden, they didn't bat
an eyelid when their curry started to affect the emmissions levels in
the restaurant only an hour after eating.

My 1983 Sierra 2.3 Ghia Estate had a heated front screen from new.

I've had a new VW in the last 6 months, (Golf GT TDI) and it wasn't on
that, so maybe it's just featuring on, or licenced for their R badged
    kit.

Didn't you know Fords are as good as 1980s Ladas? :)

Around here it is now rare to find a relatively new car without heated
rear window. Heated front screeens i've never seen, so that is probably
in the luxury segment of the market.

    Where is 'around here'?

In the UK at least, you can't buy a car without a heated rear screen
and haven't been able to for years. Even the lowly Ford Fiesta can be
supplied with a heated front screen.

Isn't it about time we made this more complicated and added the Steady
Flow Energy Equation into the argument. In this case the change in
kinetic energy of the gas (per unit mass) is matched (and is opposite
to) the change in enthalpy. I reckon to cool by 5 deg C then the air
must be accelerated by 100 metres per second. Could that be right?
I'd argue that the change in pressure causes the acceleration by the way.
Oh, and the wind chill thing does apply to this ingenious visor because
it is trying to be warmer than the ambient air. The wind chill just
attempts to account for the better heat transfer coefficient.

I meant with the heating element inside the glass not stuck on the

That's a horrible thing to say about Andy.

But... Well, it complements the whole "Frankenstein" image rather
nicely. I really hope he's going to buy a pair of Altbergs to set the
    whole ensemble off.

With a nice heated jacket and an intercom he could look really er ...
    wired.
I'll have a word with Mick, the owner, whom I know (he's a folky) -
see if we can sort out a special pair.
