Really? I (tried) to watch A Knights Tale last night, I was probably at
    crossed porpoises then.

  10. Not that this particular lady needs anyone to ride to her defence on a white
    steed but.....
As some of you know, I've had the pleasure for the last 3 months or so of
helping Donna work towards her IAM test. At the start of the process it was
blindingly obvious that she indeed had the basic qualities to make a very
good rider. Enthusiastic, intelligent, looking to make progress whenever
possible, and appreciative of the sheer joy of riding a motorcycle. And with
a real lack of belief in her own very real abilities; having read some of
the comments and attitudes expressed by some UKRM'ers in this thread (which
started, I believe, with a friend of hers offering his honest
congratulations on her achievement) I can understand why.
Blush. Just convinced you that you were actually quite good at riding that
motorcycle. And having fun while you were doing it.
Exactly. I have had the pleasure of watching her change from a slightly
wobbly rider to a confident rider, capable of making safe, swift and
unobtrusive progress (although the purple bike bits do somewhat undo the
"unobtrusive" part!), arriving in one piece and with licence substantially
less at risk than many riders. I really can't see why anyone should want to
belittle anyone else's desire to improve in this way. (By the way,
Donna, you'll need a new number plate slogan now, that "Natural Wobble" thing
is getting well out of date!)

Donna had the bottle to (a) admit she needed help (b) do something about it
    (c) risk the wrath of those of you who'll never be brave enough to face up
to the possibility that they don't actually know everything about riding. I
reckon she needs praise for that, not snide comment and cheap innuendo (no
that isn't a cut-price Italian suppository BTW). She's the sort of lady who
I would have thought wouldn't have an enemy in the world, although reading
some comments in this thread I suspect she probably now has a far better
idea who her friends are. And if you think it's easy, you're always welcome
to try being followed for 90 minutes by an ex-police motorcycle examiner to
have an honest and constructive analysis made of your skills. Or lack of
them . And, as we all know, sometimes the truth can be a little painful, as
it can deflate our carefully nurtured fantasy of being Rossi every time we
    put on helmet and gloves.....

    Well done Charders.

Okay, seeing as I have now had a mention in this rapidly escalating thread
perhaps I should chuck my two-penn'orth in as well.
At the risk of being flamed to **** I think this has more to do with the
male / female mindset. IME the fairer sex, if they are determined to do
something, will inevitably take the most practical route to achieving it.
In this instance Charders, having decided not to throw the towel in has
taken the extremely practical step of being arsed to seek out the IAM and
done some training, with an extremely good result (well done again).

Chaps (not all chaps, but chaps generally IME, including me), on the other
hand having identified a potential need, tend to sit around and think about
doing something for a long time, perhaps even being arsed to do something
minimally "practical" in the meantime such as reading a book about the
subject. As you have already pointed out, I am a newbie (DAS passed in
June) and I am the first to admit that I do lack confidence (anyone who has
ridden out with me will testify to the fact that I am *slow*). However, in
a typical blokey manner I am more likely to discuss this face to face over a
pint, or make a joke of it with other riders rather than post up about it
here. Also, in a typical blokey way, my take is that with continued
practice, confidence will come, and with confidence, better riding will be
achieved, which I also know is no substitute for some proper advanced
training (Mined ewe, as I only generally get out on bike at weekends, this
could be a long term thing). It's the being arsed bit which gets me every
time (although I was arsed to do the DAS in the first place I s'pose). In
the meantime, I continue to bimble along at my own pace, but push the
envelope a little bit each time I go out. Perhaps Charders' example will
spur me to to do some advanced training, my DAS instructor recommended it
when I passed (he would though, wouldn't he). I must admit, I have been
giving it a lot of thought lately, although if I do something I very much
doubt it will be the IAM route, as "clubs" aren't really my bag.
Very true, having driven a car almost every day since I was 17 I am still
constantly surprised by howmuch I do know, but, more importantly, how much I
    don't know also.

Sorry to be rambling on, it's a combination of age, getting up too early and
    not enough coffee.

Anway, there you go, now tell me I am a sterotypical gender sexist ****.

    You're a stereotypical gender sexist ****.

    Better?

This thread *seems* to have missed the two fucking points (even though
    they've been stated:

    i) SD was having a pop at the IAM, not Charders (and I must admit to
    being skeptical about how much someone's riding can improve in 3 months;
sure it can turn a rider lacking in confidence to a capable rider but to
    an "advanced" rider?)

ii) The reaction of people in this thread was driven by Charders sex.
Had it been you that had been the subject the response would have been
"IAM is obviously a pile of shit" and then we'd have argued about IAM
being a 'bunch of nobbers' and people knocking the IAM not knowing what
    they were talking about.

But, hey what the **** do I know I've not done the IAM thing won't ever
do the IAM thing and don't have a pair of tits.

    Much, thanks.
Not at all, I was merely addressing the point made in the bit that I replied
to, i.e that I had not posted previously about lacking confidence whereas
    Charders (possibly) had.
Yep, I got SD's point straight away too, and would not have bothered even
entering into this thread had I not been mentioned. I do however think that
the fact that Charders did the training and got a fault free result is a
    laudable achievement.
Heh, I ride like twat anyway, so prolly wouldn't want to risk embarrassing
myself in front of some super qualified riding-god type. In the meantime at
least I can sit on the bike in the privacy of my shed, crouched over the
    tank pretending to be Rossi.
I am with you on two of the above, but have found that as my weight is
increasing I am developing a very credible pair of man-jugs.

    Have a go on that.
