I thought you'd have your motives.

And as you say it's more than a little lame these days.

A bit like shouting "do you shag" at women. It was funny once[1] but
    not so funny now.

[1] Actually not so funny when we shouted it at a friends mum... the
    things one does at 14.

I imagine that the true worth of an IAM pass has just been
    demonstrated.

Donna passed her IAM this morning with not one adverse comment from her
    examiner. A good result methinks.

    Well done chaps, well done.

A few months ago Charders posted here about how to overcome a lack of
confidence on her bike, and the almost unanimous verdict was that she
    should do some advanced training.

She got off her arse, joined the IAM and did countless evenings and
weekends riding with her observer[1], doing exactly what she'd been
advised to do by those she trusted to give sound advice i.e. ukrm. Today
she took her test, and passed with not one adverse comment from her
examiner. I wish for her sake that she'd got the same response from you
    lot.

Fat lot of good you've done for her self-confidence. Give yourselves a
manly slap on the back chaps, you deserve it.

[1] Which is a fucking sight more than the majority of those giving the
    advice have done, me included.

    Well said Lozzo.

The poor lass was only lacking in confidence, and she needed the extra
training to help with that. [1] She did the extra training, took the
    exam, and she passed.

And, bloody good for her to do it too. She kept at it when she could
easily have given up on more than one occassion.

She has every right to be proud of her achievement, and I am bloody well
made up for her. I *knew* she could do it and I told her so when she
    SMS'd me this afternoon.

[1] Having had the opportunity to ride with her during the summer I know
    this.

Just as well, really. They're a bit thin on the ground round these
    here parts.

Donna was lacking in confidence, yes? She didn't have much faith in
her own ability, am I right?

I've never seen her ride, but have no reason to doubt her judgement.

She does IAM training, and a few short weeks later, puts in a
    faultless observed ride.

    Now, either:

    a) her initial appraisal of her ability was way off kilter;
    b) she's a very quick learner;
    c) the "advanced" part of IAM means next to nothing.

I don't know which of these scenarios is accurate, but I'm prepared to
hazard a guess. I could be wrong, I hope I am.

Misplaced confidence is way more dangerous than not enough, as I'm
sure your youthful experiences (and mine) have shown.

Just as an aside, would we have been invited to give ourselves a
"manly slap on the back" had this not been Charders?

    A few short weeks?

    Totally incorrect dear chap.

What has the fact that it is Charders got to do with it?

She had the balls to openly admit she was lacking in confidence and, as
lozzo pointed out, got off her arse and did something about it. She
could so easily have packed it all in - and she was ready to do so at one
    point in time.

She didn't, she carried on and has improved. Crikey, there are some shit
unconfident car drivers on the road who don't bother to do what she's
    done.
