I'll ask you again as you probably didn't understand the question....

What do you call advanced riding?

And therefore, what is average riding?

See there you go: equating fast with good. Which is bollox.

By your standards I should be Advanced, by mine I am barely alive only
because the gods seem to want to prolong the agony.

I really don't know where I fit into this lot. I need assessing and
    training I think.

There's no category labelled "utter shite", mate.

Like Des's "clique theory", it's full of holes.

Like a Gruyere - or a drilled Cheddar.

I must admit to quietly toying with the idea of an assessment ride [1].
Mainly to find out does it look as scary as scary as it feels.

[1] and a track day [2]. Which could be a right hoot.
[2] need proper leathers as I understand Belstaff and open face helmets
don't cut it with the track crowd.

    Pip :
I'm well aware of the dangers of compressing a multidimensional skill
space into a single metric. All I was really trying to do was to get
Charders to place her tack on the line, so we could see to what level
/she/ felt the IAM 'advanced' test raised the bar.

PS. liken me to Des again and you're a dead gin-ger, y'hear?

Ah, no, I was adding good to fast, not equating them.

Did you miss the bit where I said some people would always be crap?
Plus, doesn't mean they won't also be lucky.

    My, hark at her.

Take any metric that can be assessed; amount of braking carried out,
distance of braking before obstacle/reason for braking, observation of
hazards, conscious awareness of potential hazards, smoothness of
throttle control, ability to negotiate slow speed hazards, consistency
of lines through bends, ability to judge speed of oncoming traffic etc.
    etc. etc.

Take a number of riders, a statistically significant sample, and measure
them according to these criteria. Weight the results appropriately
depending on the importance of the particular metric and get a score for
each of the riders. Work out the arithmetic mean and standard deviation
    of the weighted combined ma.

Average rider would score the mean mark

Advanced rider would score a mark one or two standard deviations above
    the average.

Is that clear enough or do I need to redo it with diagrams?

If you need diagrams then I'll need Simian's help because I'm crap with
    ASCII art.

    **** off you ginger twat.
Difficult to measure that one really. "miles between crashes" would be
one way but I doubt that's accurately recorded by anyone.
