Platypus wibbled like a little girl.... My eldest sister went out with a bloke who worked for a company called Midland Structures, they made steel framework for industrial buildings. After a couple of visits to our house, my dad told him he wasn't allowed to come round our house in the works van anymore. It bore this legend down each side: MIDLAND STRUCTURES ERECTION DEPARTMENT -- Lozzo ZZR1100D, GPZ500S, CB250RS x3. I must admit that my one foray into the TVAM did not inspire me to go for the IAM. It felt to me that the rule book was never to be questioned, i honestly felt like a pork chop in a synagogue turning up with a sprot bike, tinted visor and a non OEM can. The conversation which clinched the - i have to leave was - "Using two fingers when braking is bad, because you could trap your other two fingers". I'd rather do the odd weekend like yourself bimbling around Wales.
Oh FFS. What would they think of killswitch backfires as a way of informing another motorist of your presence I wonder.

Charders : I'll have a go at that. Unsafe Advanced | | etc, |-----------|----------|----------|---------|---------| | | | Beginner Competent Quite good. Beginner -------- Probably riding for less than 18 months, very slow & wobbly. (everyone at first) Unsafe ------ Probably riding for 1-5 years, no or little extra training. Due an accident about... now. (pick anyone who's had more than two or more accidents in the last 12 months, or should have) Competent --------- Probably riding for 4-60 years, maybe some extra training. Makes mistakes every so often and stands a chance of having one become expensive / painful eventually. (probably about 1/2 the people on the group) Advanced -------- Riding for more than 5 years, either many more with no accidents in the last 15, or only a couple more with lots of good training and a large lump of innate skill. (TOG is a good example - not amazingly fast, but very safe) Quite good ---------- Like advanced only faster. (JP, Champ, that nice Mr Ferrier, etc.) Obviously there are people who can move from one end to the other in a very short time, and others who will never get to competent no matter how many years/miles they spend on two wheels or how much training they get. Equally, there are people at the advanced end who get blind pillocks reversing in to them when they're stationary. And those who appear safe and fast, but have a tenancy to throw their bikes into the scenery at every other nice pair of legs they see.
Not sure about the relevant positions of "Quite Good" and "Advanced" but... my, you do like your ASCII art.

On the whole they've been okay - the gear changing thing was the only real 'niggle'. Neither instructors mentioned how to brake - they just want to see it being done. Attitude towards speed is also reasonable.
In fairness I've never had it that bad. And to be honest, I would also consider myself slightly below where I would like to be - but that's mainly the overtakes as you well know ) Still, by Simians scale, I have another 2 years to go before I could consider myself 'competent.
