I'm serious! Slow speed control, how to accelerate to get out of
trouble, get through gaps you thought weren't possible (this takes
practice of course because you don't want to come flying off when you
snap a brake lever on a lorry on the way past ;-)), learn how traffic
and traffic flow moves and best of all, know almost exactly when the
lights are going to change :)

Which would make it very lonely nice thing in Grimsby though.

I used to live with a foreman of a steel erection company in Leeds
and he had to spent two month in Grimsby on a project. I've never
seen anybody losing their temper so easily, just speaking about
a place. I learned a breadth of new swearwords too. ;-)

Well, I'm sure that if I'd have had the choice of a 'compentency' test
to an 'advanced' test, I'd have gone for the compentency one. That's
all I ever want to be. It's not my fault they call it an advanced
    test!

And can I ask what you consider the difference to be between
    'competent' and 'advanced' ?
I don't know what the IAM pretentions are tbh. Certainly, I've not
seen any on the group I belong to. Either that, or maybe, just
maybe...I might BE police standard ;o)
(It's ok...I *was* only joking before I get flamed......)
    Yeah, right.

Well done indeed. I still haven't got round to actually taking mine :)

The TVAM seem *very* fussy about the standard you need to be before you get
put forward so I'm still on 'A' where I need to be 'A+' [1]. Oh well,
hopefully in the next few months I'll pull finger and actually get round to
    doing the test.

That said, I thought about it the other day and the only reason I'm doing
the IAM (now) is for the insurance discount - bimbling round Wales with
Geoff and Dave is far more enjoyable and I learn more <shrug> - and that
doesn't apply as I'm getting older and the bike is rapidly depreciating, and
a few of the 'social' aspects.

Oh well, something else to stick on the fire^w wall.

[1] Not helped by previous instructor who simply did not understand or chose
to understand that a GSX-R600 makes **** all power at 4000rpm and that was
NOT the ideal rev range to have when moving (or in fact, ever).

I did. But he wasn't overly interested 'too uncomfortable' or something -
probably true when compared to a VFR.
Anyway, my new (old granny on a Fazor - I kid you not) instructor seems much
    more fun :)

I used to know a guy who had a job erecting TV aerials. He reckoned he
could have a dozen erections a day.

Sounds entertaining. I once saw an old granny on a pan, she can't have
been more than 4 and a half feet tall but had no problem with the bike,
or even putting it on the centrestand.

Competent; riding to an average, or slightly better than average,
    standard.

Advanced; riding to a standard much better than average

I cannot believe it's possible for someone to reach an advanced standard
    after 5000 miles of riding.
I'm not afraid to insult people if the mood strikes me. That *wasn't* a
dig at you. If I'd made a dig at you it would have been a lot blunter
than that and I'd have left you in no doubt that I was having a dig at
you. Look at my posting history for heaven's sake.

    I despair, really I do.
