  2. OK, can I put a word in here?

Yup - Allan has no idea how to work with the IT/Geek/Net/Whatever
world that most of us live in (and if we didn't, we wouldn't be here).

I've shut up for years now about how he was treated. I agree that he
did not know how to present himself on here (WTF is a Megarider?). But
I think I have to say that I get pissed off that someone who really
does have the right attitiude [1] in mind (but does not know how to
succinctly say it) gets torn to pieces, is something that will forever
shit me about the internets. (sic bloody sic, **** you).

If you aren't as swift a wit as Knob then you cannot be right (sorry
Clem, I'm not criticising you, just how this system works).

Yes, Allan came over as an overpowering knowitall. But - whoops -
maybe that is because he isn't a script jockey that we are all used to
hearing? OK - maybe he is an overpowering knowitall. But ****, he's
put his livelihood on the line to say he isn't. There's only a handful
of aus.moto people here can say the same.

[1] Attitude: ie, want to stop bikers getting killed. Whatever way it
works. And I did not see anything that NSMSC was doing that reversed
that. Some things could be done better, but hey, I'm not the expert.
Ask Jeffles, He's the Safety officer. He's asleep at the moment
    though. Fucking wussy poms. :)

    Night night.

And I did keep in touch with Allan after he stopped posting. Mostly
because I want to deal with anyone that wants to get to the same
result as me, regardless of their method, and also becaause I'm a much
nicer guy than you pricks, so there :p

    Guinness anyone?

More like an overpowering arsehole, I'd say.

Getting someone cut off from their ISP just 'cos you've got a thin skin is a
    **** act.

    Kev,
he dobbed me in to my ISP for breaching the acceptible-use rules by calling
    him a sh**p-sh*gg*r.

That's nothing to do with slow wit; that's just mean-spirited bullying.

Mean-spirited behaviour has never been accepted here.

  5. Yep - I know, he totally over-reacted. (Actually I'd forgotten about
    that bit).

I still think he just didn't understand the online way of doing
things. His perception of what was going on here was skewed, but his
intentions towards the motorcycling community were still well
    directed.

    YMMV

Maybe I'm just too lenient on people . . .

Not only that, but he didn't *want* to understand the online way of doing things.

Good intentions only go so far. They need to be presented and actioned in a way that the intended audience are willing to accept.
Very few people are willing to accept a message presented with beligerance and self-righteousness.
Meh. Who said that was neccesarily a bad quality? ;-)

Yes, you are. The guy tromped in here, started spouting off the bleeding
obvious then chucked a hissy fit when an orderly queue didn't form to
    lick his arsehole.

    **** him.

  8. Like I said, YMMV . . .

Be a funny little world if we all thought the same eh?

    Cheers

PS: Don't get me wrong, I think that he was in the wrong, but I know I
tend to take people at face value til they really **** me around. He
    didn't . . .

    Snip a bit.....
    ..
Gawd.. we leave you with Jeffles for five minutes... and you have your
    own soapbox! ;P

A few of us didn't Kev, but we listened and learnt.
His motives were probably well intended, but Kev... there are quite a
few people on this channel who also have a bit of a clue on road
safety and do contribute to the masses in a meaningful manner - not an
outright - *I am right - the rest of you - are wrong* . That Zebee
    bloke springs to mind.

I'll leave that to clem to reply ;)
Allan coming over as an overpowerinf knowitall isn't the problem Kev.
I think that one of the main reasons he was cast aside was that he
COULDN'T acknolwedge that this channel also had people that were
knowledgable in road safety and more importantly - road sense.
Tsk tsk mate - that has to be the guinness talking ;P

    ok, talked me into it!

I agree with Johno that that was the problem.

He lectured. He lectured a lot. And he treated people like a rather
poor teacher in a classroom when someone questions. He didn't engage,
    he just tried to overbear.

Long time ago when I was at SAIT, one of the lecturers there said that
because of the large number of part time students that you had to be
very careful what you said and how you said it, because whatever you
were talking about the chances were that one of the students was doing
it for a living and would call you on the slightest mistake. He also
said that it was an advantage - that you could learn the latest in the
real world from them if you tried.

Alan was too used to dealing with people who never thought about road
safety, who were coming to him for teaching. So when confronted with
a newsgroup full of unknowns he couldn't adapt. He couldn't manage to
work out who knew what they were on about and who didn't, and he
couldn't drop the "teacher knows best" style.

It wasn't that the place was full of geeks. It was a rally fire with
people of all levels of skill and knowledge, not a classroom for
    beginners.

He failed the usenet social skills test more or less. NOt enough humour,
and not using a killfile virtual or otherwise.

Everyone gets someone having a go at them. It's how you handle it
that makes your rep. Alan made himself a rep as a knowitall with poor
social skills. He maybe *did* know a lot, but he didn't know how to
get it across in aus.moto and he couldn't learn.

Every newsgroup has its personality, and that changes as the frequent
posters change. But I know of few newsgroups that cope with someone
coming in and lecturing the inhabitants and demonstrating neither
    flexibility nor humour.
