I regularly travel on the Northern, Victoria, Circle and Jubilee lines
and aside the seemingly total absence of Circle trains when I need to get
to Paddington in a hurry the whole thing runs well. Even when delays are
being announced trains still turn up and take me away before I get cross.

However, I don't attempt to travel north from London Bridge 8-10am. Ever.

I travelled from Harrow to Wood Green last night - Met Line (twice[1])
and Piccadilly line. The journey was pretty good and took about an
hour. However, journeys like that should be the norm, rather than the
exception that they have now become.

The return journey took an hour and three quarters but a lot of that
was waiting for connections, which obviously aren't as good at 11pm and
    later.

[1] Harrow to Baker Street on a fast[1] train, then Baker Street to
    Kings X on another.
[2] They're not really 'fast', are they? OK - so they don't stop at
three stations but they frequently get overtaken by a 'slow' train
whilst stopped at a signal near Wembley or Neasden.

Remind me what she did that was bad, would you?
Not really. She actually got change implemented.

I'm struggling to see anything 'good' that outweighs the crimes she
    commited.

Don't try to say that beating the NUM was a good thing because all
that did was push up the price of coal and split communities.

She made no effort to prevent the invasion whereas on previous
occasions nuclear submarines had been sent to the South Atlantic to
    act as a deterrent.

Failing to do so when the Argentinians began sabre rattling coupled
with the announcement that HMS Endurance was being withdrawn a few
months before the invasion took place might not have been engineering
a war but they weren't the acts of someone trying to prevent one.

I still reckon the "Gang of Four" might have cracked the mould of
British politics a tiny bit even if they hadn't broken it, were it not
    for the Falklands effect.

Dunno if she engineered it, but I think you have the right of it.

Don't forget that the Thatchers directly benefited financially from the
Flaklands, since Mark was directly involved in brokering the sale of French
    ordnance to Argentinia.
    [/QUOTE]

Well, arms sales generally were a bit of a Thatcher era "Batting for
    Britain" initiative anyway, no?

My first opportunity to vote was when she won in 1979. I started to
make plans to leave the country a few weeks after she was elected
because it was obvious she was intent on fighting the unions and the
best way to do that was to create mass unemployment.
Labour didn't help themselves and nor did the unions with the 'winter
of discontent'. Nobody enjoyed seeing rubbish piled up on street
corners and I felt particularly vindictive towards the yorkie eaters
who cost me hard cash when they went on strike and prevented finished
work leaving my company and me getting bonus payments on work
    despatched.
It's not as if members of her own party were particularly impressed by
her either but a lot of them faced the dole queue if she was beaten in
    the next election.
I wasn't living in the UK at the time and the thing I found most
amusing was the South African government trying to get into Britains
good books by offering Simonstown as a potential naval base for any
attempt to re-take the Falklands. What a bunch of cunts.

As someone who was quite young at the time, can anyone explain what
was really so bad about the Poll Tax?

It strikes me that it was actually a fairer way of taxing people for
local services than the Council Tax is. After all, all council tax
seems to do is tax your purchasing power.

Lots of people felt that making everyone pay the same amount was
    somehow wrong.

Why? Why not say everyone should make an equal contribution to
society? Given income tax already taxes your earning ability?
