I appreciate that this is an old film that many of you will have watched a
long time ago, but I watched the 1985 Terry Gilliam film "Brazil," last
    night.

I found it disturbing, humorous and just downright weird in places, but it
had a very strong message about increases in bureaucracy removing society's
sense of humanity. There were also really quite accurate and uncanny
parallels with the civil liberties we're supposed to 'do without' in the
name of fighting the war against terror. All in all though, very odd but
very good and incredibly relevant to today's society.

"Brazil" and "12 monkeys" would probably make my all-time top ... I
was going to say top 10, but it's more likely that only one of them
    would so ... top 20.

It gets repeated on FilmFour quite regularly and I sometimes watch it if the
missus isn't around (she doesn't like it).

Actually I think I've got it on VHS as well.

I don't think any non-python any Gilliam film would make my top 50,
    probably
not even my top 100. He has these grand visions, but lacks the ability
    to
    actually put them into practice.

If you change "ability" to "budget" I'm with you. Having said that,
these are probably the only two Gilliam films that wouldn't be in my
    all-time top 20 *worst* films.

I hope he doesn't do another Baron Munchausen in the upcoming
    "Brothers Grimm".

  7. I watched "Lost In La Mancha" recently, and his test footage in that
looked amazing - really sad that the project caved in. A very
    interesting docu for film fans.

Plot Outline: Fulton and Pepe's[1] 2000 documentary captures Terry
Gilliam's attempt to get The Man Who Killed Don Quixote off the ground.
Back injuries, freakish storms, and more zoom in to sabotage the project
    (which has never been resurrected).

    regards,
    oliver.

[1]same folks wot did making of "Twelve Monkeys" aka "The Hamster Factor
and Other Tales of Twelve Monkeys" http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0116479/
    (equally as good)

It was too ... bitty for me. I know that was how it was written, as
several short stories, but it just didn't flow as a film. That's why I
hope Brothers Grimm doesn't get the same treatment. I would imagine
there's a good chance of it being lots of fairy tale stories revolving
    around a central plot.

Also, IMO, there have been much better "post-Python" films than
Munchausen. "Erik the viking" and "Yellowbeard" spring to mind, slated
by the loving public, box office flops, but great films. I'm still
waiting for Yellowbeard to come out on DVD.
