yes you can - just tell the DVLA the new engine number and they update
their systems, and send you a brand new V5 out.

Yes. You just write the new number on, send it back and wait a couple of
    weeks.

The only time anybody'll realise it's not the original engine is if they
send their fiver off to DVLA for the entire V5 history.

Or if you tell 'em. I mean - it's not as if anybody here would consider
hiding warranty history when they flog a bike on, is it...?

I'd tell a prospective buyer about the work. I feel it's the right
thing to do. Hence why I don't want that done.

    Two identical bikes for sale.

"Yeh, the first service showed a serious engine problem, so I pushed them
for a complete replacement engine under warranty"

"Yeh, the first service showed a serious engine problem, but I didn't
want the number to change on the paperwork, so I made 'em take it to bits
and try desperately to fix it instead of just changing it"

I know which I'd buy. Would I buy it instead of one that hadn't had the
problem under warranty? It wouldn't make any difference to me, tbh.

'course, if you can swing a complete new bike - 4k miles less, months
newer - instead, than that's firmly the best result...

I think you're right, fwiw. You shouldn't be put in that position.
The engine of your bike, that you bought in good faith, has been shown
to be defective. That isn't your fault and the onus shouldn't be on
you to deal with the resale-related repercussions.
    New bike time, I think.

Actually, as long as the problem is solved, does it matter? If the
problem doesn't get solved then it goes back. I'd never sell it with
    the problem un-resolved.
That's what I'm aiming for and am pushing the dealer for.

  13. Thank you. I had a feeling it might've been but considering your
predisposition for shite vehicles I had to ask ;o)

    Thanks for clearing that up.

I might give the sofa away at an OSM raffle one day to raise funds for a
charity or sell tickets to burn it. It's had a long and dubious history.

Sending Laura down to ATS for some tyres was a mistake, then?

Hah. I'd be doing well getting her to go to the filling station to put some
    diesel in it.
