Indeed. As WUN said, the Coldstream road is the nicest way across the
border, but the nicest bits of Northumberland are further west - the
castles (Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Warkworth) and the coast (Craster,
    Lindisfarne).

And if you're visiting us and have the time, come through Newcastle
and pop down to the quayside for the Sage, Baltic Flour Mill and the
    bridges (e.g. Millennium Bridge).

    They are lovely roads.

The A68 via Jedbergh is infested with speed cameras.

I haven't done the Coldstream road in recent years. I wouldn't be surprised
    if it is similarly blighted.

There are plenty of B roads to exploit, though.

    @news.individual.net:

**** knows. Last time I was in the Borders area, 7 years ago, I stayed in
Haltwhistle. Seems the 2 places I have used in the past are no longer open.
1 pub now a private dwelling and the guest house owners have retired.

Tripadvisor has a couple of decently rated places

ITYM East (as SD hinted). Alnwick is very pleasant and the home of the
House of Hardy museum. Though not a lure for a non-angler.

Cragside House not far away is worth a visit if in to early hydraulic
    engineering and electricity generation.

Of the castles, Dunstanburgh is the most evocative IMO, and involves a
    picturesque coastal walk.

Lindisfarne shouldn't be missed if staying in that area. We stayed at a
hotel in Seahouses, but I am sure it would be far too pikey for Bear.

Not recommended if on a tight schedule though. "Time and tide..."

Possibly more than you think. It's snowing heavily here, and Luton
    airport's closed.

You could make the trip back via Bracknell in Berks - where they make
Benylin - it tastes just the same and is a lot cheaper. I particularly
like the peaty-smokey-herbally after-taste of the well kept 2004
tixylix. Let it breath at room temperature (48C) for 12 seconds before
sipping it straight from the bottle.

There's nowhere in Newcastle proper to park outside - not least our
favourite restaurant there (Vujon, just off the quayside
http://www.vujon.com/. Can't personally recommend a hotel (never use
local ones!) and, as I said in my email, chez Irvine is already booked
by family. I have, however, heard one or two people speak favourably
    of the Vermont
    http://www.vermont-hotel.com/ .

Otherwise, we've had a decent lunch here
    http://www.blackbull-lauder.com/
and often fancied giving here a try
    http://www.tankervillehotel.co.uk/ .

You'll get a 100% refund, or free rebooking from Easyjet if they cancel
    it.
    You'll probably be OK.

It's the end of the south though.

Still - even if the plane is cancelled, you could go to Luton and hitch
the rest of the way. Hitching in London is shite, but standing by the M1
in Luton should give you a real head start.
It depends - if it's too cold to mow the grass on the airstrip they don't
like the planes landing in case they ground loop.

If it's any consolation, I'm slightly nearer Heathrow than Luton - and
it's snowing fairly heavily here, too.

The clue is in the name of the station - Luton Airport Parkway...

In railway terms 'Parkway' means it's nowhere near where it's claiming to
    be.

Bristol Parkway is just outside Mombasa.

There's a certain irony in that, considering the typical destination of a
    Luton flight...
