    Oh well.

It looks like I'm up for replacement by a Sri Lankan computer program
    by next February.

  3. Arse. So no new bike, then?

Nah, soddit. Buy the bike anyway. Something will turn up.

Any chance of a decent redundancy package?

Ah, bit of a ****. I didn't think your job was easily automated?

    Oh hold on <googles>
    motherfucker, I was wrong
    www.adulteverything.net/ae/men-machine-fucking/ NWS obviously

Seriously though that's out of order, it's prolonging the agony unless
they are providing help and assistance to find another job

It's not easy to automate. Sure, one can automate up to a point the
flight booking process but it's the knowledge that I've spent years
gaining about travel and how contracts and fare constructions work.
The rules of airline ticketing are very, very complex.

They wrote a Fare Manager program a couple of years ago in which you
could feed in "Fly from Heathrow to Krabi" and it would churn out
things like "Fly Gatwick to Dubai then to Chang Mai then get a taxi to
Krabi" (Krabi is an island) or London to Chang Mai then connecting
flight to Bangkok then fly to Krabi. It took them on a 'round the
houses' route which isn't fun. It didn't know how long a transfer
took. It didn't know what a transfer was or what a passenger needs.
Knowledge of the areas is needed.

Bah, it's utter shit. A computer just can't do this. It can search
through a few rules, fine, but it can't get what the passenger needs.
They want me to help trouble-shoot the program which I inadvertently
    helped to build.

  6. Well, that's OK, isn't it?

Bound to be full of bugs. It'll take an age to sort out.

Buggy or not, it is certain to require enhancements requiring your
expert knowledge is it not? Unless you were included in a proper
requirements analysis. Could take an awfully long time if you play your
    cards right.

No. It's not like that. I provided the information on what it should
contain and do and it's been developed and enhanced along those lines.
They don't need me to tell IT what to do.

Shouldn't have any trouble finding another job then Nick. I'm sure there are
plenty of knobheads working in the trade who don't have the enthusiasm or
    knowledge that you do.
Sex? Comps can get that too I believe.
You helped build the program that's seeing you out on your ear? Nothing new
    EVER happens.

I thought you were offered a position in Sweden not 5 minutes ago? That firm
of yours seems to have troughs and peaks almost unheard of.

I see some consultancy possibilities in the offing.

A friend of mine worked for a division of Galileo, was made redundant and is
now back earning substantially more as a freelance trainer/consultant

Well that would make it the first piece of software in history that did
everything it needs to on day one. I so love Darrel Ince's expression
'Fashioning the Baroque' in relation to software development.

Learn all its little foibles and 'features' and become the only one who
really knows how it works and how to get the right answer out of it.

Such a strategy in dealing with a nationally used, but rather niche
package, known for needing a lot of complex configuration keeps me in
    beer tokens these days anyway.

I see Galileo going down the pan as The World's Fave. They updated
too late. Sticking everying over to FocalPoint was a good plan but
ViewPoint came in a bit too late, IMHO. Things like Amadeus Vista
with their prettier interface make it more user friendly.

    I'm still hardcore, me.

Unless I get into Business Travel it all pays pennies. I can't afford
to relocate at the moment, either.

I prefer the challenges of flexing set packages and working around
complex contracts to create a bespoke arrangement. The idea of
working from a blank sheet doesn't excite me. To satisfy the 'flexing
packages' part of my brain I'd probably have to work for a large
operator. The only two decent large ones I know are Saga Holidays (5
miles away) Titan Hi-Tours (63 miles away) and Kuoni (70 miles away.)

Farting around and bending contracts is a pretty specific job. My
current employer only has one of me for their highest priced and
highest profit product (Round the World Cruises) and a team of five
for their entire Long Haul product range but they don't seem to think
we're valuable anymore. This is a mistake.

I'm going to have a few meetings this week and next week to say how
    wrong they are.

  16. Nonononono. You've missed the point. They pay you to relocate.

  20. Ah, the halcyon days. I worked on some of the planning for that - we
reckoned it would take over the world. Anyone here remember EPSS?
