  1. Yes, it is Dennis Ireland (I supplied him with his leathers during the
late 1980s). I thought Don Morley managed to roll out of the way,
however, and was unscathed. I know Dennis sustained some nasty injuries
as a result of the accident, because I saw the scars when measuring him
for his racing leathers. And talking of marks left by accidents, my
wife tells and interesting tale about the contrasting colours of Mick
    Grant's Y-fronts...

Almost as soon as I hit send I thought "Dennis Ireland?" :)
Well, of course, I could be wrong, but I remember reading Morley
describing the photo, and how it put him in hospital.
    Eww.

Yes, I seem to recall the same thing, poss. the same interview/article
in some mag or another, in relatively recent years.

Don Morley already had a broken ankle at the time and was unable to hobble
out of the way but the bike bounced over him leaving him unscathed.

From what I remember of the article that accompanied the picture Morley
already had the broken leg and had asked Ireland to do a few runs in the
pit lane for him. Ireland shows off a bit, the throttle sticks and heads
straight for Morley who having a broken leg couldn't get out of the way.
Ireland clips Morley crashes and fucks himself up quite badly.

The race organisers wanted to ban Ireland for a long time because of his
pitlane antics. The photo proves the throttle stuck and they let him off.

Shell used that image to some effect as advertising.

  8. Like I said, I *thought* Don managed to roll out of the way, but I bow
to everyone else's superior knowledge on the extent of his personal
    mobility at the time :)

  11. This is right. I went to a slide show given by DM and this is exactly
how he told it. He wwas lying prone on the ground at the time and
couldn't move out of the way at all.

Looks more like a Carmichael original, to me.
