    Hi,

Go on then, which US State is Washington DC in? I know that DC = District Of
Columbia, but Google refuses to clearly tell me which state this is.

    TIA

People are starting to see my problem, if doesn't seem to be in any state.
But it's not one of the 50 usual states (www.50states.com) - so I'm stumped.

I did think it was W. Virginia, but I'm not sure. Mapquest doesn't seem to
want to make its mind up.

  10. A bit like London then, but not being surrounded by Virginia obviously.

No, so Washington DC isn't in a state. IIRC that was deliberate as
Washington DC is the capital of the USA and so exists outside the state
    system.

    Stonge fumbled, fiddled and fingered:
Mappoint shows District of Columbia as a separate entity bordered by
    Virginia and Maryland as per

    http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/dc/

further down on there it shows

District of Columbia as a state

It looks like it isn't in a state, nor is it a state - it's a thingy [1],
    outside the state system.

    [1] unofficial title obviously

Hang on a sec - if someone posting in your 'mode' says something that
is obviously wrong, and then you disagree with them, then that makes
them right, but then everything you say is wrong, which means <head
    explodes>

That's because it isn't in a state. After independence, several
different cities were used as the capital and when Washington was
finally chosen there were disagreements as to which state it should
be a part of. Someone came up with the idea that it should be on
federal land, rather than in a state and so DC was born, made up
of land donated by Maryland & Virginia.

I think this is a similar reason as why Canberra is in ACT rather
than any Aussie state. Ivan will be along shortly, no doubt.

    <sigh>

Washington DC is *definitely* not in a state, for very good reason -
it is the federal capital of the USA, and therefore it was (and mostly
still is[1]) felt that it should not come under the jurisdiction of
    any individual state.

The same is true in Australia, where the federal capital Canberra sits
in it's own little plot of land called the ACT (Australian Capital
    Territory).

Muddycat will be along shortly to give chapter and verse. <checks
watch> He should be awake about now.

[1] I seem to recall the residents of DC agitating for full statehood
as, paradoxically, because they don't live in a state they miss out on
certain benefits that the other 99.9% [2] of americans get.

    [2] DC is very small.

But, you must agree, it's not at all clear that it's in neither - hence my
    original post.

    But, it's all sorted now.

    Cheers.
