apparently whoever it was phoned back and "was quite nice", so we can
    be fairly sure it wasn't.

I'd given him my old W810i to use with his PAYG SIM, and I thought I'd
cleared off all my contacts from the phone memory onto my own SIM that
was previously in it, but must have missed one. Of course, he deleted
the contact after this little incident and so I don't know who it was.

oddly enough, I don't have BGN's contact details. I'm assuming it was
someone from here though, because they managed to establish that the
mixup was caused by "darsy", rather than my real name (and hardly
anyone outside of Usenet calls me "darsy").

come on. If you got a txt from an unknown number, with a message that
meant nothing to you, would you:

    a) reply by phone and politely ask who it was or
    b) txt back "who the **** are you?"

    ?

    Or c) Ignore it.

I once received a voice-mail where the person declared their undying
love for me. Shame it was some bloke with an Indian accent...

You'll grow to love him in the same way. Just give it time.

Well, TBF I guess it would depend on the exact message, but in the past
(and on the rare occasion it's happened) I've always ignored it.

If it's important they'll text again or phone, in which case that time
they might use the correct number!

It's easy. I've even learnt to semi-ignore my phone when the texts
    are for me.

I once got a call from some Brooklyn momma announcing she was on her
way to the airport. She didn't stop to check she had the right person,
so it was a while before I got a word in edgeways. Several hours later
she rang to tell me she was at Heathrow and "where are you honey!"

I wonder if the person she was visiting even knew she was coming...

I could but it's probably, politically, not a good idea.
