    Hi all,

Interesting to read on the bikesales.com.au site after entering details of
    bike to get a guesstimate on the value...at the bottom of the page it says;

"Dealer's retail prices will be higher than these private sale prices
because they must prepare a bike thoroughly, both mechanically and
aesthetically, and they provide a warranty"

What is this about providing a warranty?? As far as I am aware a warranty is
not provided in about 99% of cases in bike shops...
    Anyone able to clarify??

    cheers

Dealers do only as much work to a bike as is required to hide the problems
for long enough for someone to buy it. They don't care about mechanicals,
and prefer the lowest cost option for any aesthetic issues. The reason for
the higher price is this makes it easier to maximise profits - either by
people who actually do pay what they ask, or by appearing to offer great
deals by discounting it to some level still well above the true value, but
sufficiently below the initial price. And you've got as much chance finding
a dealer that offers a warranty as you do an honest politician or a celibate
    priest.

Am aware of the speel regarding preperation of a bike aesthetically and
mechanically. They have to sell the bike but I am of the opinion that bike
sellers are a lot different to car dealers. I would say that in a high
proportion of cases a bike dealer would be a rider and would be eager to
sell a bike more from a riders perspective rather than say a car dealer who
is only interested in 'shifting units'.
I am aware that bike dealers are insterested in this as well as they have to
sell to survive but sellers are riders too....(did that make any sense at
    all???).....
My last bike that I bought the dealer offered to repair the bike if any
problems were found in the first three months.....had a couple of niggling
problems and he kept his word...

What Ii am interested in finding out is about warranties on 2nd hand bikes
sold at shops....what is the cut off??

    cheers

  5. What state are you in, Col?

I was looking at putting a bike on consignment (in NSW) and got the whole
"you know, its a tough time for bike sales.....blah blah blah". "then you
have to factor in the GST, blah, blah, blah". Then he said "If it is under
30 000 km and 5 years, I have to put a warranty on it....blah blah, blah".

    All the best

depends a lot on the dealer.

Big dealer who relies on volume? Will do the minimum.

Small dealer living on the edge? going to depend.

Most eurobike shops that do only eurobikes (that is they aren't a volume
dealer taking on a single euro brand as a sideline) do fairly well on
    second hand bikes.

Shops that only do second hand bikes are either very good, or completely
    dodgy (aaah... Avon motorcycles!).

I think there is no statutory warranty but that does not prohibit the shop
from providing you with a warranty. They must also abide by other consumer
protection laws, such as those regarding merchantable quality and fit for
    purpose.

Would be interesting to see if this could be proven in a court...I would
predict that the right lawyer could make a case if something went awry after
    purchasing/selling a bike....
As above although recently on one of those 'current affairs' shows they did
a piece on cars sold with roadworthies even though the cars were near
    death....not too mention very dangerous...
Now what would have happened if you had driven one of those vehicles out of
a car yard safe in the knowledge that it was safe and roadworthy but, some
mechaincal part fails, you have an accident and injure yourself???

Lovely Victoria where the public transport system grows safer everyday cos
it costs more to travel on it...and our highways are safer cos they have the
bifen wire rope barriers next to the road....and the $50 TAC levy is
attracting high interest in a high yield interest bearing account under the
    name of S Bracks......
    sorry, got carried away there....
Interesting looking at the different times of year to sell and buy....I
bought my last bike on the 31st of December....guess that the dealer was
desperate to sell at that time of year.....

As stated on the tag attached to bikes in the shops....I guess that if a
dealer wants to project a fair and reasonable persona then providing a hand
shake agreement as to after sales care, can go a long way...
So how is the new beastie Nev??

    cheers
