This may well sound like a stupid question but I'm gonna ask it anyway...

Being a complete newbie... is there any standardised signal to let oncoming
bikers know that they are about to happen upon the officer with the speed
camera that you have just passed ?

In the car I'll often give cars & bikes a few flashes of the headlights to
signal, but nowadays car drivers just give you a blank look and continue
into the jaws of the law, whereas I tend to think if someone is flashing me
like a thing possessed that something is afoot.

As I said, it may seem like a stupid question but I don't want another biker
thinking "that tosser could have warned me"

    "Thumbs down" seems the norm.

  3. if you're on a bikr, thrn waving like ****, or using the well known
"slowing down" up and down wavy arm movement should be enough.

If they don't understand, then more fool them eh? oh and they probably
will when they round the bend and see the thing too late.

Either "slow down" motion (hand out, palm down, move hand & up down)
or "police alert" (point to sky and rotate hand at the wrist) would
    alert me to dangers ahead.

Phone them up and warn them but always confirm by fax to be sure.

Being a novice, the lifting of the front wheel by about a foot will happen
just before I am sitting on my arse in the road !

Thanks for all the tips, sod it I'll do them all,

So if you see someone that looks like they are having a fit coming towards
    you... slow down a bit.

    All the best, David

See now you are really showing your lack of knowledge. You have to go
well in excess of three feet before that happens and besides that is the
universal bikers signal for "Pigs behind me, can't stop to chat"

In an attempt to raise the front one foot off the ground I am likely to
visit every increment of the arc (including three feet) before plonking my
sorry arse on the deck :)

I'm not even confident in letting go of the bars to do the "thumbs down" it
is likely to be the fastest thumbs down in history.

In some respects it is a shame that you are no longer required to
demonstrate an ability to control you machine whilst undertaking hand
signalling procedures and certainly it is something you need to know.
Two gestures in particular will soon become as normal for you as
    scratching your arse.

That wasn't you on the Burgess Hill relief road yesterday was it? I
flashed my lights like mad and waved a good "slow down" wave and to my
relief and satisfaction saw the brake lights go on in my mirror.

  16. Heh, first time Will saw me doing that (about my second ride out) it
gave him a bit of a shock. I mean, I only shrugged, to indicate that
no, I didn't know which way to go back either, I didn't have my hands
off the bars for very long.

Maybe I thought I was still riding pillion...

....and then I could do bizarre quazi medical experiments on you using some
cheap and not very sharp things from Argos.

I'm not entirely sure how ethical performing medical experiments on
    their staff would be.
