we've plenty of troops. they're just in the wrong place.

anyway air strikes don't need much in the way of personnel. and they use lots
    of great british equipment.

It's sort of mind boggling. I love Hog's posts because he has such a
range across his viewpoints, you're never sure what he's going to come
    out with next.

Anyway where are the resident lefties in this thread? Striking?

The spelling thing isn't fair. We'll stick with names only.

    T. E. Lawrence.

    Of Arabia.

Possibly the single coolest white bloke of all time.[/QUOTE]

Most definitely a contender for that crown. However, Laurence is not my
    surname.

Oi! Mind you, I only know him because Grandy (**** off ogden) had his
books. I don't remember seeing them when we were packing up the house
earlier in the year so Uncle Iain probably has them or they got thrown
    out :(

While you're here, have you or any of the other UKRM readers got a
copy of Edward de Bono's Mechanics of the mind?' It's out of print and
    my usual avenues aren't helping.

Aside from the fact that as a kid I was always called Lawrence of Arabia
as a piss-take, I've come to deeply respect the guy and his
acheivements. Only the other day I read an excerpt from one of his
books, where he was describing a ride down a country lane on one of his
Broughs. Inspired writing, to say the least.

Nope. Anything else I can tempt you with I wonder?

    <swivels chair to scan bookcase>
    Technopolis - Nigel Calder
    The Neophiliacs - Christopher Booker

Or how about something completely different: The Rituals of Dinner by
    Margaret Visser.

Oh and BTW another Laurence: Lowry.

    Yeah, like that.

It was the idea of him crouching over some poor terrified wee girl and
honking like a bull walrus that had me in fits of giggles.

I was impressed by people texting whilst riding modern stuff, never mind
writing a book whilst riding a Brough.

The rather nice chap in Waterstones suggested scarthins. I explained
that I'm not allowed in there. the first step is admitting you have a
    problem.
I think that's the one I got from the book man [1] and gave to MattG -
has it got a stripey cover?
    Oh yes please.
Oh yes, I like that sort of thing.

[1] Had book shop as means to have office space for a local
councillor, didn't need office space anymore, packed up books and put
them in his garage and house. Box after box after box. Wife got
miffed, via bookcrossing he gave his books away. Karen and I got to
know him and were allowed to go to the house and rummage through
    boxes.

    I was in bibliophile heaven.

  16. My brother does (or at least he was always trying to get me to read
it). I'm sure he would be happy to lend it to you next time you are in
    Portland, Oregon.

Not this one. A sort of cross between a No.6 "The Prisoner" bubble thing
and lava lamp blob effect. Subtitled: "Social control of the uses of
    science"
Email me with some suggested swaps then. You know my predilections.

Fairly sure it is the same one.
Will do. I shall have a think. I'm determined to widen your novel
pleasures. I think you'd like the ideas in Will Self's Great Apes but
    not enjoy his writing.

fairly sure you'd enjoy Carl Zimmer's Soul made Flesh
