  1. I've sold the ZXR750 so I'm looking for an Early model ZX9R or R1 I think.
I've also heard R1's don't last too well. Gearbox and other troubles. Is
    this true?

So who wants to sell me a bike?

Well, I've *heard* such things, too. Mate who was head mechanic at
Frasers reckoned early R1s were a bit fragile - gearboxes, valves -
    even pourous crankcases.

Well, *if* I get to the Ally Pally show and *if* I decide I really do
like what I think I might[1] and *if* I get my contract extended
then I *might* be getting rid of my 9R[2] in a couple of months.
    It's a 98/R C1 with around 26K[3] on it. Excellent nick but
haven't a clue as to it's value. TOG?

  5. Just like my old one. Does it have the standard pipe and full service
    history?

The gearchange detent spool spring takes about half an hour to fix and
costs about a fiver all in. Even Bear can fix one, he watched me replace
his. I've known quite a few abused high mileage R1s, they last ok if
treated to regular servicing. If anything does break then it's usually
    gearbox/clutch related.

ZX-9R C2s, that's where the smart money goes.

    I haven't seen a new 9R for sale in a dealers in over a year. I'd stick
    to a C model 9R, the E/F has a gash looking fairing/headlights and the
paintjobs are verging on the 'gay as ****' end of hom.

A small minority seem to be running the bore slightly oval on cylinder 4.
Shows as a temperature drop on the exhaust.

I came this > < close to buying one like that too ....... If it hadn't been
    for Flitwick MC I would've : (

Suspicion is being pointed at impatient, mechanically unsympathetic tw*ts
not running them in properly. [Which puts me off an exDemo].

Other than that I recall one of the big bike mags saying recently the only
real weakness was clutches, which ain't so bad.

If you're interested tWO did a comparison of all 4 R1 models in about
November 04 or January 05 ...... Its not all that erudite as half the time
they're blathering about aren't we big boys getting so rat arsed we were
ill, but its fairly interesting when you read the relatively interesting
    bits.

I'm convinced I would like one anyway.
    But I'm easily led.

What puts me off buying a Mille isn't the Italianess of them, in fact
that's a definite plus. Aprilia seem to have got it right with the RSV.
It's the spares availability and dealer back up they don't have.
