  1. In the light (or lack of it) my earlier post.

Any thing with a reasonable spec that will run XP or later.

Staples have a budget Lenovo for £276, which is a fucking bargain for the
    money.

OK, it's no thinkpad, but mines been shite.

  3. A colleague has just bought a budget Lenovo (G550) from Amazon for £260.
It's a superceded model, but spec is good enough to run Win 7 OK, at
least for web/mail/office- SWMBO has one and it's fine. The G560 that
    replaced it is £278.

  9. My A1181 Macbook is still getting a regular flogging. I have started
running Win 7 on it in parallels and it was slowing down. This made me
happy because it gave me the excuse to buy a new one. But I threw 2gb
more ram in it and it is humming along again. It is looking like I
won't need another upgrade for at least a year. DOH!!!! They can be
had on ebay for fairly cheap.

I would guess (though I haven't looked at a bill of materials
    analysis) that:
    - Tablet touchscreens are significantly more expensive than cheap
    laptop screen/keyboard combination
    - The processors/chipsets/memory used in tablets make a significant
combination to cost (lower power/more modern architectures)
    - The batteries in tablets are probably of a higher quality/more
    recent design (higher energy densities)
    - The tablet components are not (yet) commoditised in the way that
    laptop ones are
    - R&D to build a tablet significantly higher than to 'churn out
    another laptop'

I'd add to the above that Apple make an industry leading margin but
tablets do seem to be more expensive to build than laptops today.

This. Tablets are still in their early generations, which means there's a
lot of work needed to design & test the PCB and mechanical design:
there's a lot of interesting analogue (touchscreens, audio, battery and
power management) and radio (3g, wifi and the associated aerials) stuff
to get right as well. Which is why not many manufacturers have managed to
do it right yet and they can charge a premium.

In a quiet voice I'm tempted to say Apple have got it pretty close to
    'right' at the moment.

When I first saw an iPad I didn't understand why you'd want it. Now
it's replaced my (paper) notebook and also my laptop. Most of what I
need to do gets done on the iPad during the working day (email,
notes). It's only presentations/documents and 'SAP stuff' that drive
    me to my laptop.

I've always understood why some people would want one, but I already
get frustrated with lack of screel estate[1] on a laptop so I can't see
    me getting one.

[1] I just made that up[2]. How wanky is that?
[2] Which doesn't mean somebody else didn't first, but icba to check.

I had the opposite problem in that I was getting frustrated with the
    screen on my netbook.

I picked up a cheap Android tab and it has replaced PCs for just about
every task. If I need a PC for some purpose, I just open a remote
    session from the tablet.

What do you use for note taking?

It's certainly taken a chunk of stuff for me. Newspapers, books, that
    kind of stuff.

It's not a laptop, though, but I have (probably) slightly more complex
    technical requirements.
