Wanted: LAM "crapper"

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Bob Milutinovic, Jul 4, 2004.

  1. G'day, folks...

Relative newcomer on the scene here (certainly to this newsgroup); I've
not ridden for the best part of two decades and am now returning. Though
I've had various comments that I'm returning to two wheels due to a
"mid-life" crisis, my reason is that I simply can't afford the petrol to run
my car every day, nor to use the entire car in transporting only myself to
    work 'n back.

In any case, I'm now back to my "Ls," and though I've already got a
Kawasaki Vulcan 800 on order, can't use it to get my license back.

As I found during my pre-learner course attendance, I _have_ forgotten
most of what I knew in my previous riding days, so I _will_ need to
    practice.

To this end... Does anybody (in New South Wales, preferably greater
Sydney) have a 250cc (or RTA learner-approved) bike of any kind which is
near its last legs but still registered? I'm hoping to spend around $500 on
a "disposable" bike, which needn't last me more than a few weeks, to simply
practice on and pass my license test.

Failing this, does anybody know of a dealer (or anyone else) who'd be
willing to accept this amount as payment for a short(ish) term loan of such
    a bike?

    Thanks to all in advance.

    - Bob.

In case you haven't already noticed, the return e-mail address in this post
is bogus. I'd prefer replies here to the group, but if you'd prefer direct
e-mail then do so to np0319 -at- cognicom -dot- tk

For whatever the reason....welcome back to the fold. :)
Hmmm, pity you didn't ask for a loaner from whoever you ordered the
Kwaka from...you parting with a reasonable amount of cash can make them
    more co-operative.
Yup. and a lot has changed in the last twenty years too.
There was someone round here recently with a KH125 Kwaka which might fit
the bill. Try googling for it.
There is a mob near my place, just off North Rocks Road, who rent
motorcycles. They rent 250's to folk exactly in your situation, but,
while I can't remember their rates, $500 won't get you one for very long.

Trouble with this situation is that you need a bike quickly, since the
    L's have a time limit.

You need a bike that's ready to go and in fairly reasonable condition,
'cos you don't have the time to stuff about to fix up a bike.

I think HART (at St.Ives) do a pre-MOST course, and they can rent you a
bike for that, as well as for the actual test, but how much, and what
sort of practice are you thinking about?

    regards,
    CrazyCam

youre better off just hiring a bike. i dont mean those wanker $3000 deposit
    type hires.
i mean you can hire a bike for some time at HART (honda's training
    facility).

i think it cost me $20 when i did.

You can hire a bike from the training centres for all the tests, for the pre-learner it's included
in the cost of the course. they'll either tee you up with a cb250 or a tx250 (i think it's a tx).

for the P's you can hire a bike, but let them know when booking, and it'll cost you an extra
$90 on the day if memory serves me correctly.

in the meantime you can get any old shitbox you like and practice away on it. Also there is a bunch
of info on the RTA site. I'm not sure if i was putting it in response to yourself or someone else in
a near identical situation, but it's recent, if your newsreader doesn't have it, it'd be in a very recent
thread with a similar title to yours.
