No1 son is approaching 16 and badly wants a bike. He's always wanted
something with gears and preferably a trailie. He started out with ideas of
2001-on Aprilias/Gileras etc but rapidly found out how much they are to buy
and more importantly how expensive they are to repair. One of his mates has
been off the road waiting for some electrical part for 2 months now for his
    Aprilia.
My suggestions of early 90s Jap tackle were initially dismissed but now it
appears he can see the benefits of learning on an SOB.
Anyone know of either a DT50MX or TS50X in more or less any condition, up
for sale currently, please let me know.
    Ta.

  2. Sound chap. My son's DT50MX proved impressively crash-resistant (he fell
off it at least four times in his first year, and all he broke was an
indicator (twice) and the plastic headlight cowling (£40, new, from
Yamaha - still a listed part, for a 1989 bike, and it took 24 hours to
    get it).

It's been detailed here before, but I bought an essentially sound one
that had been used off road (and had a 65cc kit on it) and which came
with all the lights etc to bolt back on. Cost about £340 on Ebay. New
regulator, chain, sprox, tyres, bulb, battery, swingarm bushes, head
races, etc etc brought the end cost up to £500 or so. He ran it for a
year and sold it, again on Ebay, for £600.

Set up an Ebay search. Bear in mind that a decent DT50MX will be at
least £400, and probably neaer £500.

    Ta. noted.
The real bugger is that about 5 years ago I was offered the chance to clear
out a blokes old garage which was full of 70/80s Jap mopeds. Most were old
Honda Cxx 'chicken chasers' but there was at least 3 DTs in there. I could
have had the lot for sod all but didn't have the space or interest at the
    time.
