Wouldn't that be a case of the only thing available and better than
    nothing though?

If the 'real' shims are readily available there's no reason other than
    pig-headedness to not use them.

Yebbut ISTR you complaining that our job was to entertain you.
Welcome to the world of ukrmc where the gentle windup replaces the
    blatant trolling of ukrm.

You know the little plastic/fibre thingy on a set of points that rubs
against the cam to open/close them? Well about 27 years ago one of
those snapped on my mate's CZ somewhere in mid Wales. We whittled a new
one from a twig & it got him all the way home to Wing - probably around
    100 miles[1].

I now keep a tin of assorted twigs in the garage in case I need to
replace the ignition pick-up on a bike when the shops are closed[2].

    [1] This is true.
    [2] This isn't.

Yeah, we've never heard that before especially not from you.

Thus spake The Older Gentleman () unto the assembled multitudes:
Coo, I bought one of them new in 1990 and fitted very similar Krauser
panniers. Kept it for a couple of years. It was a dependable but
uninteresting "UJM". F476 BKR I wonder where you are now.

I guess you could put bits of steel feeler guage under a shim if you were an
*awful* bodger ;o) But then again a loose tappet might be preferable....

Apropros of nothing you can grind shims out of silver steel and harden them.
If one has a little mill/surface grinder it's quite easy, I've seen it done.

....or you could pay a couple of quid and get them from Jaguar.

In this case it was an out of the way house in Caithness in winter, but yes
    quite.

Actually the bloke in question, a sterling character now passed on, would
make his own just because he could.

  10. Just collected it and ridden it back across London. A very nice honest
GT550. One of the first ones with the Zephyr 550 engine, so not quite as
    pokey as the earlier models.

Number One Son's getting it for his 21st. He appears well chuffed. he
was eyeing my Ducati, but student dgs in Oxford with no garage: it'll
get nicked or dissolve within six months.

  12. It's still a Ducati. No garage = a skipful of corroded dead metal.

And a decent chain. It looks pretty enough to still be nickable.

    No, it doesn't.

    It's a GT550.

Probability of being stolen is nil.

I meant for the Kwak... or any bike left out in the open.

Anyway, how much do you hate him to consider giving him the Ducati?
    :p

I had a fairly scruffy CB250RS nicked once. The scrote even came
tooled to cut the chain[1] it was locked with.

[1] OK, 1" link mild cheese^wsteel DIY store chain.
