Now here is another company reporting PROFITS. $94 Billion in sales for last
quarter (3 months), and a good bit of that was PROFIT. Ratio wise they beat
    Exxon.
Next thing you know some of the financials will be reporting PROFITS, and we
all know money is a necessity. Drug are too, and guess what, Pharmaceuticals
    are raking it in.

I just don't know how we're going to make it as a nation with these
    companies making money.

Well, let's see the hue and cry for a windfall profits tax on big box
stores. Let's see people screaming about Walmart's OBSCENE profits
and even MORE obscene return on investment.
We need a windfall profits tax on any company that makes more money
    than the government degrees.
I wonder which rich politician is benefitting the most from Walmart's
    obscene profits?

    H'mmmmm.....

I'd never been into a WalMart. I get gasoline in my cars all the time.
If I don't want to shop at WalMart, they don't get my money. If I
don't want the oil company to get my money, where do I go? If I want
to power my house with electricity, I can't go shopping for power.

    It seems people forget this....

I don't mind a company making money. I mind a company making money
who's supported by our government and has a monopoly on a market. If I
can't pay for prescriptions, there are government programs that help.
Where's the programs for help with putting gas in my car that I can't
afford? Now I hear the cars getting great gas mileage (those little
bitty things) are having problems getting insured. If you can't insure
them, you can't drive them (legally). Gee, why are the insurance
companies refusing to insure cars getting good mileage?

It's exactly the same thing. You go ahead and get started on
limiting the amount of money that oil companies can make, JT. I'm
tired of paying $4,042 per employee every three months for Blue Cross
Blue Shield family health coverage. Dammit, my contracts typically
only allow a 3.5% annual rate escalation, and those fuckers at BC/BS
raise their damn rates 9-13% every year. I'm losing money on some of
these employees. I want the government to step in and cap those damn
insurance rates. No, better yet, everyone needs insurance, everyone
needs medical care, so I want the government to buy it for my
    employees, so I don't have to. I can't compete with Lockheed-Martin
and Northrup-Grumman when it comes to providing health care for my
employees. They buy in bulk. I don't. It's not fair. Why don't us
little guys ever get a break?

Ordinary folks are complaining about the high cost of health insurance
and health care at the water cooler at my office. They can't afford
it. Make the government do something about it.

Many people in my office commute in from West Virginia because houses
in northern Virginia cost too much for them to afford. They are
often complaining about it at the water cooler. It's exactly the
same thing. People have to have a place to live. People selling
houses in northern Virginia are charging too much money, and many of
them are making a fortune doing it. I want the government to step in
and put a stop to it. It's obscene.

Well I am going to finally have to say it. Reading this thread has
    been downright comical.

Hard to believe a group of reasonably intelligent people think their
Government can shield them from price increases related to a globally
traded commodity, their country is a net importer of.

Global use of energy is going up, dramatically. Fossil fuels, right
now provide the foundation for that energy.

If you care to shield yourselves from the increasing cost, use less of
the product. Buy a more energy efficient car. Take mass transit. Ride
a bicycle. Hell walk when you can. Turn off the air conditioners. Turn
down the heat. Improve the insulation in your home. Switch to energy
    efficient appliances.

There are but a few of the hundreds of things you can do to reduce
    your dependence on energy.

Today my annual expenditure for energy compared to income is about 60%
of what it was ten years ago, because I have done a few of the things
    noted above.

It's really quite simple and it works.

Yeah the price of oil is high right now. Although the speculators in
the futures market are driving that increase, their influence is more
a symptom than the cause. The cause is increased use and a limited
    supply.

No one here has hit the nail on the head regarding China's impact on
the market. Are they using more oil? Absolutely, but their impact on
the price is only marginally related to consumption. They are not only
buying oil, they are buying capacity and that is the scary part.

They are out there buying production capacity from nations not
friendly with the US like Venezuela, Iran, Columbia, Nigeria, Algeria
and a few others. Not only do the Chinese stay out of local politics
they also have a UN Security Council veto to throw on the table, and
don't think for a minute oil producing countries like Iran are not
willing to trade a little production capacity for a favourable veto
    played at a strategic time.

Once the Chinese control significant production capacity the US will
    be truly fucked.

Factor in the restrictions your goofy government puts on oil imports
and you are cutting your own throats.

Suck it up boys and reduce consumption. There is no magic bullet that
will shield you from the global price for oil. It's not something that
can be controlled within your borders.

And seeing as almost 20% of your oil comes from Alberta, personally I
hope you keep your heads stuck in the sand and continue to drive gas
guzzling cars and blame your elected officials for the high price of
fuel. Most of that extra money flows to Alberta. :)))

Hell yea.And if we vote a liberal in office this time, gas at the pump will
go down to $1.35 a gallon.Who just said that? It's that damn
conservative/liberal idiot in the Whitehouse now that has driven up the
price of oil.Screwed the perfect economy up we had.

Calgary didn't say that the price of oil would drop because of
conservation. He said you could reduce your expenditures through
conservation. He pointed out that his expenditures have dropped by
40% due to conservation, despite a large increase in the price of oil.

Dominion Power here in Virginia has just gone to the utility
regulatory commission and requested an 18% price hike. They won't get
it all at once, but they will certainly be granted a significant
increase, because their costs have gone up far more than 18%. It
will be interesting to see if I can hold my electricity costs down (I
have an all-electric house) in light of the upcoming increase. I
have no control over the cost of energy, but I have lots of control
    over my use of it.

And when Don talked about the Chinese staying out of local politics,
what he meant was that - unlike the U.S. - they will not pressure a
trading partner to adopt a pluralistic, representative, human-rights
    adhering government model.

    No Kool-iad there.

So, the reqirement isn't that a company make a lot of money, but
people have to whine about it incessantly? IOW, if a company is
making an "obscene" profit but no one notices or calls attention to
it, then the status quo is cool?

What happens if you get your humongous tax on the oil companies, and
in two or three years, in a down cycle, they start losing money and
laying off Texas oil workers? Federal aid? Corporate welfare?
    Government intervention?

C'mon, surely you have thought this through, right? What will the
tens of billions of dollars of earnings that you want the government
to confiscate from the oil companies be used for? Will you have
consumers file for a gas rebate based on family income and miles
driven? What about fuel mileage? What if those poor families are
stuck driving an old 1978 Suburban, and it only gets 11.5 mpg, so they
burn 1,213.7 gallons of gas in 2008? Should they get $2,427.40 in a
special energy use tax refund? What about the poor people who
couldn't afford to buy gas and walked, instead? How are they going to
get their fair share of the nefarious oil company's ill-gotten gains?

I'd love to hear the plan!

(What if people start whining about some other bidness????)

Energy cost will continue to rise. Granted there will be ups and downs
the short sighted among us will attribute to whichever political wind
they are currently supporting, but over the long term the value of a
unit of energy will go up.

Bottom line burning fossil fuels is not a good thing and not something
that can sustain the growing population of the world. Voluntary
reduction has not achieved the desired results. The high price of
energy will in effect reduce consumption, and boys we haven't reached
the tipping point yet, and that means the price will go higher.
Precisely my point. I should have said it that way.
