VTR1000 - Should I?

Currently riding a YZF1000R Thunderace. Use it to commute, scratch,
tour and track. It's getting toward the 100K mark, so I'm thinking of
getting something newer. I appreciate the power, but don't need so
much of it (must be getting old).

I've always liked the VTR1000, but don't have any long-term experience
    with one.

Can anyone comment on this bike for the above uses and anything else?

    Thanks.

    Worn,

Did very similar to yourself. Had a Blackbird for 3 years that i got rid
of when i got to 100k. Originally rode a few VTR's (when the bird was in
for a service) but was totally un-impressed with them.
One time however I had a VTR that had had pipes and sprocket changed and
decided that that would be the next bike. Sure enough, when the time for
a new bike was here it was a VTR I bought. Up to about 18k now & don't
have any regrets from buying it.

Used the Blackbird for the same duties as you use the YZF and don't
think the VTR would miss the mark in any of the areas.

    Regards

Go and ride a few first, see what you think of it, and then think more
    on it

they seem a good bike, heaps of them around, you dont mentino what
vintage VTR you want.. The other thing days of loud pipes on V2s are
coming to an end with EPA busts everywhere popular... :(

You'll want to be sure which model you want... the earlier ones only had 16
litre tanks and the later models I think are 19 litre... which you will need
to consider if you want to go touring.

The feel from the EPA is that they are going to branch out. They know
they can get a good haul, so they'll try there often, but they've been
    indicating they might do more.

The trick is they have to get coppers to help if they want to do noise
tests. I believe that they are working it soon so the coppers can bust
you for not having the infamous sticker, which would be a nice gotcha
for a copper with a dislike of bikes.

I use mine for "commute, scratch and tour" and I think it's an excellent
    bike for doing so.
Bear in mind though, that the next-newest bike I have ever owned was an
early 80's CB750 so I haven't got any newer bikes to compare it to.
    - Not so much weight that I can't get it around the bends (I'm 170cm, 65
    kg).
    - Not so little weight that I lose high speed stability (sits on 160kmh
    comfortably).
    - Excellent mid-range punch when you feel like cutting loose.

    Howdy,

I had a YZF1000 for a couple of years. Wonderful bike to ride. I also liked
the idea of the VTR and I ended up test riding one. My impressions were that
it sounded wonderful, went OK, and was generally a pretty cool bike.

Then I got back on the 'Ace, and straight away I felt the 'Ace's extra
power, more precise handling, much better braking, and particularly the lack
    of vibes.

Don't do anything until you ride them back to back. I bet you keep the 'Ace.

No, but I wondered what the unobvious differences are between a normal VTR
    and an SP1/SP2?

VTR1000, terrible bike, I've only put 20 000 in the first 10 months of
    owning one, and root me.

It performed faultlessly (except for water killing the ignition, 3 bucks
worth of roofing mastic and a three strips of gaffa tape, fixed oh and
thanks to Sharkey and that take away shop with the pirate, crab and fish
    thingy).

    245 km+ possible from the 16 L tank.

    Twins sound good

Comfortable, competent[1], lots of rubber choices. Under rated bike.

    white power shock.

Then why the same name? surely they should've called it something else? (Or
it that a really stupid question?)

Actually hooning it does not do much to the fuel economy
Riding around town shoots it all to hell (minus 30%)

I would say about 220km from a 16 litre tank.

2001 and onwards have a 19 litre tank
