Anyone know much about this phone deal that uses your broadband connection.
Pros and Cons maybe?? I am thinking about switching. It seems like a good
deal. Unlimited local and long distance calls anywhere in the US, Canada and
Puerto Rico for 24.99 a month. I think my home phone cost me about 70 bucks
    a month now.

    It's not for everybody.
    It's not for me.
However it may be for you.

With a 70 bucks (unacceptable) home phone I would say you need to make some
changes. Do you have packaged services, i.e., dsl, home phone, cell, and
long distance? Would you lose some pricing advantages by breaking up the
    package to go with Vonage?

No package deals here. I have had the same cell phone service since 1987. I
have cable modem and basic cable television with Comcast which my internet
is Broadband. My home phone is with ATT. Never have had or even checked into
    any package deals.

Vonage may be for you. But there are some pretty good package deals out
there. What not research what Comcast has for your area before deciding. I
believe Time Warner has acquired Comcast so you may need to talk to them.
Even if you do decide to go with Vonage, packaging the other services will
most likely save you some good money.

Time Warner did acquire Comcast. They havent done the full switch over yet.
My e-mail and home page are still Comcast and will be for a little while
longer according to the e-mails they have sent out. This damn cable modem
internet is always changing. Thats probably why I have never done anything
with any of them because you just dont know how long its going to last.

Most people's satisfaction with VoIP is usually dependent on their
Broadband Connection. I've been using Packet8 for almost 2 years and am
very pleased with it over my FiOS Broadband connection. I have some
information on VoIP Service posted at
    http://sharptelco.spaces.live.com/ .

I signed up about 30 minutes ago. I like the fact that you dont have to
change phone numbers. I have had the same number for almost 20 years and I
wouldnt want to mess that up. I wouldnt want to miss all the calls from the
    telemarketers you know.

I am the same way about the cell phones. I dont really even need a home
phone. My wife wants to keep it or it would have been gone a long time ago.

I won't go into it much, but you might be surprised at the "savings".
You still need a broadband connection for VoIP. People see their bill
for their DSL/phone service. They see $70 and think that $25 sounds so
much better. Then when they drop their phone service and pick up VoIP,
they find they're only saving (at most) a few dollars. There are also
issues with VoIP that hasn't made it completely reliable for typical
    home phone uses.

You might've been better off just getting a package through your phone
service...unless you have a bunch of friends you want to talk to in
    Puerto Rico...

After over 8 years, I finally gave up my ISDN circuit at my house and
went with DSL. My savings are about $50/month. I don't make
international calls, so VoIP wouldn't be worthwhile to me. If I need to
make long distance, I just use my cell phone.

And speaking of which, what ever happened to the break-up of AT&T? SBC
built up to the point they took over AT&T and kept the name. Now we're
back where we were in the 70s!!! It's getting really confusing too.

We dont even have LD on our home line.
Why? We both have cellular phones.
Why pay for the phone co. LD, when we dont ever use it, so I cancelled
it. Saved $4 bucks. (conservative Independent, I am)
