help request for volunteer riders - blood deliveries
Important- Could you help out ??

You can save a Life ! .... SERV needs volunteer riders to deliver Blood
and Blood Products to local hospitals - these are EMERGENCY deliveries
only between 7PM & 6 AM on a monthly rota basis.

Working overnight from offices in New Malden you will be required to
pick up and deliver blood and blood products from the National Blood
    Bank.
Delivery to Sussex and Kent are done by relay at designated halfway
    points.

Training, Equipment and sleeping quarters provided - Rota basis.
You must have a full licence, reliable transport and able to commit to
at least one night per fortnight.

If you are a biker this is a great way to do something really worthwhile
on your bike - it may be another biker's blood you are carrying.

For further information with no obligation, please telephone the Surrey
    Co-ordinator on 0208 668 9831 after 6 PM.

If you read this and populate other boards please do us a favour and cut
    and post it there too.

    </q>

They have a website at http://www.serv.org.uk/

  2. I could.
    That's not too bad then.
Excellent, do they provide a bike?
I've got reliable transport and once a fortnight isn't what I was
expecting. I wonder if transport means to New Malden or to carry the
    claret?
    True, true.

Could be a murdering, knife wielding drunken yob, too, but I digress...
This I will do. I'll phone them tomorrow.

    Can I apply for a bar to my SKoGA? I thought this was Malden, in Essex :}

However, apparently there is not a branch running in Essex, but if they get
enough interest, there may will be one started. Anyone who's up for it can
    mail details to

  4. I won't be going to either. I just phoned and as it's a charridy, they
don't supply fuel, bikes or anything else. I pointed out that my current
steed would be unsuitable as there's now barely enough room to carry 2
litres of milk and that was met with a rather bland response of "we do
    it out of Tooting"

I'm sure they're very good at what they do but it sounded like a
    logistical nightmare to me.

  6. I must admit I've felt more excited about mowing the lawn.

We don't have a lawn, but I get your gist. I really felt quite up for
    doing that though.

  8. And me. I wasn't to excited about doing it in sub zero temperatures,
hail, sleet and snow, but a warm place to come back to with hot food and
soup with a few of my comrades might have made it bearable.

I like having a good moan if it's in jest, but these seemed to do it
without any effort at all. I fear I'd end up like that robot in the
Strongbow advert that goes in the pub with the girlfriend and ends up
    getting fried.

Was it that thrilling that it made you want a lawn just so you could mow
    it?

Plus the moral superiority of being an all year biker gets immeasurably
    increased. ;)
It just seemd like something I could do without interfering *too* much with
the important things of my life, and be worthwhile as well.
    Not seen that one.

  13. I already am so ney bother, there.
That's how I saw it as well. A sort of do a good deed but not so much of
it that it'd piss you off kind of thing.

I wonder what you have to do to get to drive one of those big Volvos
with "BLOOD" written in huge letters down the sides?

You get reflective yellow squares, blue lights, woo-woos and everything.

No no, I am as welll, but doing or a reason other than you have to could

  15. Oh, I see. You could always try despatching for a day a month. I
wouldn't want to do it for more than 3 days on the trot though, that
really would piss you off or does that come under the heading of "have
    to"?
Yeah, I quite fancy the idea of wearing a white shirt in a nice car.

Well, I'd put courriering under a 'not have to' type thing. (No offence)
Certainly not something I'd chose to do.

I spose most people feel a commitment to thier jobs, but for me it seems
rather more strong when I'm not actually being paid, plus there is the
aspect that you might really be helping to save someone's life.
Nah, I'll stick to the deigner leathers but the lights and everything could
    be rather Mad Max :)

  18. So to drive a nice Volvo with a heater I'd need to work between 6am and
    7pm?

Sorry, I'm not clear as the quote in your original post said between 7pm
and 6am. Or is that just for bikes?

  20. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
"SERV also received a donation from KATSOURIS FRESH FOODS LIMITED for
the purchase of 15 insulated blood bags, which will show the company's
    name."

Heh. Not so much the cachet of being a blood volunteer, but more looking
like a pizza boy on a bike.
