Not to mention the restriction on airflow inherent in a filter fine
enough to get all the ash out - and the consequences of a filter failing
    and collapsing...

I don't think whoever suggested filters really knew anything much about
    jet engines.

For Prop planes sure, they have anyway. Turboprops, maybe just. Large wing
mounted Turbofans, no way as they ingest EEK cubic metres of air per
    second.

I wonder how often the fan and compressor blades get changed in normal
    service.

Some turboprops are reverse flow such as the PT6. These have an inertial
seperator[1] but the volcano dust might not be heavy enough for this to
    work.

[1] Inlet pipe with a 180deg bend, water and ice crystals go straight on
instead of round the bend and are dumped overboard.

I know, I wonder if some military jets do the same with turbojets that are
ducted from the front of the fuselage.

Well we might be approaching the Second Age of Vulcanism. Or something.

    No Trekkie jokes now....

    Tyred of them are we?

  17. Exactly, plus the efficiency reduction on a jet engine having a filter
would reduce what we are trying to do for C02 reduction, let alone the
extra cost for tickets as the aircraft have to burn more fuel to get
anywhere. We've got so used to getting anywhere instantly I think we
have forgotten that we are a speck on this planet and when Mother
Nature wants to play games, she will win every time.

Strangely, I've just read a 2 year old NS which says that the magma is
too cool, that it's probably cut off from its source and unlikely to do
    anything spectacular again
