    The texts sent to the pub started out:

    Fantastic place. Diving unbelievable etc.

    Then:

    There a rumour spreading that the flights home could be effected by some
    volcano in Iceland.

    The last one was about living in a hut. That arrived on Saturday.

    I think he's convinced that 'stranded' only has one dictionary
    definition, which is to run aground . A strand being a shore or beach
    (cf. The Strand, which was the riverbank in London until the Victoria
    Embankment was built)

    Whereas every dictionary I've checked also gives something like "to
    leave in a strange or an unfavorable place especially without funds or
    means to depart" or "prevented from leaving a place, for example because
    of bad weather" as an alternative definition.

    But hey, lets party like it's 1699!
