Vista RC-1 multiboot warning

    It doesn't.

Well, it does, but it mangles some files in XP that cause it to boot
slowly, and it breaks any Dev Studio 2005 you might have had installed
in XP well and truly, VS throwing out random errors in the MS dlls when
    debugging stuff.

They say, "never install beta code on production systems", I'd add RCx
    code to that list too.

Oh, also if you had Vista Beta 2 installed as a multiboot system (that
didn't mangle things), and install RC1 over the top of it, it looses
the multiboot because it copies ALL existing Windows files into a new
directory called "Windows-Old" (or something), including ntldr and all
the other NT/XP boot files.. doh.

Thats relatively easily fixed (copy back all the XP boot files to the
root and just reboot) but a PITA.

Must be you I guess, worked like a charm for me. Had the Beta, worked well,
installed Vista on top of the Beta and it still worked.
The one thing that doesn't work is unrelated to multiboot though. Can't get
wireless to work, because Intel have no driver available for the 2200b/g
wireless adapter and/or Vista has some issues with WPA.

Worked fine for me. Turned my single boot XP into a dual boot Vista/XP
with no hassle at all. I'm now thinking of uninstalling it only so I
can stick it on a VM.

www.vmware.com is your friend, and free to use the basic stuff.

Christofire? He'z just ziz guy, you know?
    No, read wot I posted.

I had XP + Vista Beta2. All working fine.

I then installed RC1. Then it broke.

    Different situation to yourself.

I read what you wrote. I included a bit about my setup to let you know
I'd tried it, and that in some configurations the automatic boot
    manager alterations work fine.

Then I suggested something that might help you avoid messing up your
system in future, i.e. VMware, although I suspect you know of it.

Ah, I see, ta. I've no doubt it works fine in 99% of cases. But I'm
always the odd one out :)
I played with VMware years ago, then they started charging the earth
for it. I've heard a lot of people using it now <looks> you using
VMware Server? They seem to have broken it up into components, does the
server create and host the virtual PC? Or just create it and VMware
    Player hosts it?

I'm toying about with Server. Create your own, use the pre-built
"appliances". I think the player just plays them, and is a much smaller
    download.

I'd always assumed it was hugely costly until I used it at work the
other week, when we downloaded it for free. I didn't know about it, so
I've been helping spread the word to those that might be interested but
were put off by the cost.

    Christofire scribbled:
IIRC it started off being free, or maybe I had a naughty copy, either
way the actual cost was peanuts and I thought it were very good.

But when they wanted seriously silly money for it I forgot all about it.

I'll download the server and have a play, ta for the heads up.
