I need some free software to edit videos (avi, mpeg etc) - just simple
stuff trimming the start and finish, cutting out adverts etc.

    Any suggestions?

Avid Free DV - no longer available from Avid themselves but still on many
    shareware/freeware sites.

    TMPGEnc - google for details

    VirtualDub - ditto

Windows Movie Maker - free from Bill Gates

No, it falls over with some of the larger files I have.

if its just a one off thing then Sony Vegas Studio is superb, I used it
to put together stuff that was in a right mish mash of formats and it
handled everything I threw at it.

  9. If you want something now and can handle a 30 day trial, get Sony
Vegas. It's intuitive and powerful. If you want something long-term,
get Avid Free DV, but as another poster mentioned, it isn't available
from Avid, but is still out there. I have it here, so email me if you
want a copy. There is no licence issue. It is nowhere near as
    intuitive as Vegas though.

For simple crunching, Virtualdub will do the job, is free and is also
a very good standards converter and file identifier.

Sounds like a program for unfunny 18 stone pie-eating northerners.

  11. Oi! I resemble that remark!

Silliness aside, it was initially designed by Sonic Foundry who had a
damn good sound editor, and they decided to add video to it. The
package they came up with was that good that Sony bought the rights to
it. I reckon it will kick arse when they come up with some high end
broadcast hardware to match it. When they do I'll kick our Avid
Adrenaline out the door and just use Vegas. At the moment I have both
the Avid and Vegas running alongside each other as there are some
things the Avid is so poor at doing that it's easier to switch over
the Vegas (and Vegas can drive the Avid's hardware by proxy). An $800
piece of software alongside a software/hardware package worth close on
    $100,000. Pretty easy choice really.
