Does anyone in the NG have experience of a good VGA to SCART converter to
run this 'ere Vaio (vga out only) through a conventional analogue TV which
has SCART and composite in only.

I *think* I am right in assuming that connecting the vga directly to the
composite will not produce a picture, or not a useable one.

Whatever you do you'll likely get a horrible picture, standard PAL is
    only 720x576 @ 25 frames / sec.

It is only getting used as a music media center so that isn't particularly
relevant. The screen is cracked and it isn't much use otherwise.

ASDA had the cheapest scart cable that I could find at
the time for £2.97 but I've since seen 3-Way SCART boxes
in the Poundland shoppe, so get one of them to butcher.
The D-15 you can get from Maplins for £1.49 and another
    quid for the surround.

Or buy one ready made for £60

I've seen cheaper on ebay though.

Just be aware that hardly any PCs will support the
required refresh rates as standard, so you'll need to
do lots of fiddling to get it working. There are plenty
of instructions in the page lined above, but it may
not be possible with your drivers.

Bugger, beaten to it. Every decent telly these days has a VGA input,
    Shirley.
And again. You're on form today, darsers.

Also bear in mind that it'll only work for ATI cards, which rules out
    pretty much half the population.

I got it working with my laptop which has a ATI xpress 200M. Took an
awful lot of fiddling with Powerstrip though.

This reminds me that I really ought to try and get the Network Media
Receiver that came packaged with the PCV-RZ504 working again. I had a
play before I got a router and became fed up with it because the peer to
peer wireless with just a PCMIA card slotted in to the VAIO was so
pitiful in range and in any case my main telly hadn't got the required
red, white and yellow phono type connection things or S-Video. Did work
though, and quite flash being able to stream TV from giga pocket
capsules to the box and audio to my hi-fi, but a pain having to import
any audio you want to stream in to SonicStage first.

Not sure how to configure it to operate via the 3Com wireless router
though. In any case, if the lappy to mother ship situation is a guide
the signal strength will still be too low to be reliable where the main
TV is (huge FOAD 'brindled' brick chimney breast in the way). I suppose
I could hard cable it, which is probably the best option as I generally
have the wireless switched off these days anyway.

    <goes off to RTFM>
