    hey,
i bought a 1985 vf1000 on sunday. is it normal for the engine to make loud
popping sounds as i decelerate in gear? its a V4 engine.

also, if i have the throttle opened a fair way, then let go suddenly, theres
a large clunk sound, as if some gear cog is not tight in there.....or i
might be the front forks but ihni.
    thanks

    Popping:-

generic symptom of an air leak in the exhaust (eg gaskets at headers ).

    ALternatively, needs a service..

Clunk...could be anything from... dud cush drive, loose steering head
bearings, loose upper triple clamp bolt, ...not to mention gearbox probs.

  3. Standard or aftermarket sports exhaust? Altered jetting to make
    advantage of the exhaust?

If aftermarket, it's probably unburnt fuel making it's way into the
exhaust and exploding. Have a mate follow you at night to see if you
get a nice blue flame to go with the pop.

The clunk may be the 'spag?' clutch. The VFs of that era (at least the
750s and 1000s) had a force limiting device to stop the rear wheel
locking up if the engine decelerates fast or the rider drops it down a
gear or two without matching revs. It makes a bit of a clunk as it
    activates.
(kind of like the clutch you get on some drills to prevent you screwing
    something too tight)

  4. My 84 "R" makes a clunk when you suddenly close the throttle too.
