Vehicle rental during the IOMTT

    Hi all,

a friend decided to race in the IOMTT'04. It would be fun to go and see him,
specially if he keeps pretending to burn his bike after a bad race result as
he used to in the past (with the help of an excess of post-race beer, I must
    admit).

Option a) Ride Barcelona-Santander, then ferry to Plymouth, then ride across
England, then ferry to Man. I don't have enough holidays left to do this.
And it is expensive. And the engines of that Plymouth ferry were serviced by
some UKRM'er, sigh. The same applies to Barcelona-Paris-Calais.

Option b) Fly cheapo Aer Lingus from Barcelona to Dublin (two hours) then
ferry to Man. When in Man, any idea about moving there? Can vehicles rent in
Ireland be taken to Man? Or is there some decent public transportation? Or
may I hike and stop a 280 pounds drunk German looking for love on a TüV
    approved streetfighter from hell?

OK, I can see how this is a problem. However, one of *the* great
things about the TT, in my opinion, is riding round the course. If
you don't have a bike, you're going to miss that
    OK - I don't think you'll have a problem taking a hire care from
Dublin to the IoM. You certainly wouldn't if you hired the car in the
North, or on the UK mainland, but I would check - Eire is a different
country, remember. The other option is to hire a car on the island
itself. You'll need to book this well in advance, I think.

Public transport is pretty terrible on the IoM, and won't be any use
at all during TT week. Having your own transport is really quite
important in order to access 99% of the viewing spots.

Last thought - could you not persuade your friend to take a small bike
    in his van/truck?

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Yes, I know. Rather than *the* trip to IOMTT is actually *a* trip to see El
    Bayeta in action.
Sounds like I have to do some serious Googling. First result

Small van. Nope. But (silly idea should've had before) may be we can arrange
the van to pick us at the ferry, specially if we sleep in the same place.
Eeer, question: could you lend me the gixxer? (I know, I know the answer :)
I recently tried one in Almeria circuit. Nice!

  4. If you check the small print in the hire contract, you're generally not
allowed to take a hire car off the mainland - usually it requires a
prior agreement and sometimes a price increase, too

Of course, he could always get a connecting flight to the IoM and hire
the car at the IoM airport

Fair enough. But your friend will porbably only be in one or two
races, which leaves at least another 6 to watch.
Not as outrageous question as you might have imagined, but...no :)

On the other hand, you will be able to rent a bike in the mainland UK
(I think there's some information in the FAW about this), so a
possible plan could be : cheap flight to UK (Easyjet to Luton?),
collect bike, ride to Liverpool/Heysham, get ferry, have fun.

Why not take Des's R1 as hand luggage on the plane?

Ah, so there's a Man airport! That certainly changes things :)

If we find some way to fly really cheapo to Dublin and then to Man (or
Luton, then to Man, but we fancy a Guinnes break in Dublin) we would rent a
car in Man (http://www.iom-airport.com/) There were 37 EUR per flight (plus
taxes) offers at Aer Lingus. Booking 5 months ahead should be fine to get
the offers. Some 3 days of car rental among 4 people shouldn't be a break in
our economies (this IOMTT thing came when plans and budgeting for regular
    holidays was already done)

Thanks for all the ideas and infos.
