Still trying to sort out getting the bikes to Switzerland next month, &
failing miserably. 99.9% of hire vans don't have towbars, & the ones
that do are either already booked or not allowed outside the country.

Has the FOAK got any ideas? Or anyone got a van big enough for two
bikes, with a towbar, & want a few hundred quid to 'lend' it to us for
eleven days at the end of next month?

lifts , some do have to bars fitted

Nope, but the offer is still there from the FBC to personally
courier the bikes there for you.)

Trucks have a very nasty effect on ferry prices unfortunately.

Tried this a while back and rang around for 2 days. They're like hens
teeth. However, when i'm out and about I often see hire vans with bars.

I think for some reason they don't like you towing. I suppose they
can't vet what you're going to tow ..

    (much later) i've ended up getting a 4X4 with a towbar ....

    Cheers

    Paul.

That would probably have been my choice, but it's not up to me as I'm
not one of the drivers. Unfortunately private insurance for vans isn't
easy to find, & very expensive, so that coupled with European breakdown
cover would probably cost more than hiring anyway.

One company said it was for insurance reasons. Another said they'd fit
a towbar to one of their vans if we paid for it - cheeky cunts!

  11. perhaps a little trying, but not cheeky - you have a problem, they
offered a solution. Seems reasonable to me.

Sounds like you want your cake and eating it - big vans are too
expensive to ferry, riding involves a tyre change, small vans don't have
    tow bars....

    how about 2 tranny vans?

That just about sums it up - we're a difficult lot.
Not do-able for various tedious reasons - plus of course double the
    hire/ferry/fuel costs.

Several times before and if you let them know your requirements they
*usually* allow continental trips. IIRC they have a few vans with towbars.

You might be surprised - CIS and Carole Nash do private vans.

My Sherpa van is with Commercial Vehicle Direct £280 FC (parked on road,
Brighton, 37 y/o driver, full NCB, non commercial use) includes
breakdown, legal and, IIRC, 'green card' EU insurance.

Can't find my policy book to check.

    In
If you're at the correct end of the country, Adeva Vehicle Rentals have
Transit vans ideal for your purpose. I.e with towbars and foreign cover.

IIRC, they've got branches in Stoke, Chester, Warrington, Oldham, Preston,
    Stockport and Leigh.

If, however, you're down South, sorry.

Damn good point - I used them loads of times when I lived in Erith, &
they certainly had towbars back then. I'll bell them in the morning.

That sounds like a good deal. It's a subject that often pops up on the
trailriding lists, & always seems to cause grief.
