Valueing a modified bike

Got some more info regarding that BMW R75/5 I mentioned a couple of
    days earlier.

Turns out that apart from some visible changes like leg shields, it's
been fitted with parts from a later model, most importantly a five
speed 'box and the later model's gear lever linkage. Most of the other
changes should be reversible (like the additional voltmeter and clock)
but the biggies aren't as I'm pretty sure that the original box doesn't
    come with the bike.

Now that bike is approaching an age where originality most likely
counts for more than practicality so IMNSHO the above mods actually
reduce the value of the bike.

    Any comments?

I'd agree .. BUT .. are you going to ride the bike and use it, or do you
want it as an irregular 'show' type ride, only brought out on sunny days
etc. If it's going to be ridden, all weathers and in all sorts of
conditions, then maybe a later 'box is a sensible addition. If it's going
to be used occasionally as a show type bike, for someone to gawp at and
mutter good things about then definitely originality would count for a lot
    more than is necessarily sensible.

Personally, I'd use it as a haggling point and suggest that you're an
afficianado of the marque (whatever) and that you really want an original ..
see if they'll drop the price a tad, or at least to something you're
    comfortable with.

Do you want a working bike or a museum piece? How much is a first-class,
wholly original R75/5 worth? ISTR you said it was LWB, and I think the SWBs
are worth more. OTOH it could be a SWB with the longer LWB swingarm, in
which case it's even less original.

It sounds like a nice, classic-looking, non-original bike for everyday use,
and for that use, the mods would be a plus. The mods might be a bargaining
point, but if you want an original, you'd be better looking for some other
bike in the condition you want.

Well, an original 75/5 in the same condition is worth something like
2.5k-3k, probably a bit more but not *that* much more. As you said,
the SWB tend to be slightly more expensive.
Well, if everything works as intended then it would be a good buy as
the five-speed conversion is desirable for a user bike provided the
correct gear ratios have been used (due to the way the speedo is
driven off the gearbox). The reason I asked for opinions was that I
normally don't "do" modified bikes so I'd need a bit of advice when it
    comes to haggling.

The speedo is driven off the back end of the output shaft, so you can have a
full set of comedy ratios in the box and it won't make the blindest bit of
difference. What does make the difference is a change to rear bevel drive
ratio(32:10 for the R75), and this should be compensated for at the
speedo(the R75 should have 1.186 in tiny print on the speedo face).

Haggling is about bullshit, so TOG would be better placed to advise you, but
for non-standard parts, I'd suck air through my teeth and let the vendor
explain why they're an improvement. And then still look doubtful.

Ah yes, I forgot the exact takeoff point. Been a couple of years.
    Yes, I know that...
Yep, I was waiting for him to turn up but it looks like he's too good
    for us these days...
    Always works.
