I heard a group of bikes going down the Valley road from my place yesterday.

Roadworks on GNHwy have been going on now for seven years. Sigh.

Triumphs are great as long as you don't let the dealer's spannermonkeys
    anywhere near them...

    Hurrah the maggot!

I suppose with 2 of them, you can always have the alternator out of
    one....

    Mine wasn't great.

OK... it was fun when it was running, but I had numerous problems.

    Porous (sp?) front wheel casting.

    Preature rusting of many bits.

The alternator was too small to keep the battery charged with the
headlights on high and the (factory!) heated grips on so I kept having
to charge the battery which meant going through batteries about every 9
    months for 3 years.

The paint scratched very very easily (much easier than any other bike
    I've owned).

The fuel gauge warning light was completely useless, came on anywhere
between 60kms and 300kms. The kit to fix this was not good, it caused leaks.

    That'll do for now....

    What model was it?

The only prob mine had from the factory was the earth block problem.

On separate occasions the spannermonkeys fucked my water pump, uploaded the
wrong tune, bodgied the earth block fix, gave it back after a valve job with
a noisy valve and an inability to idle and missed every factory recall fix.

Now 80,000+ kms and still going strong...when I finish the service...

The list of things which went wrong with my T595 seemed never ending. It
never seemed to ride the same two days in a row. Oh, that's if it actually
ran at all two days in a row. Earth plug burnt out, 5K flat spot (which no
tune downloads addressed to my satisfaction), numerous other electrical
problems (both pre and post ground plug burnout), throttle grip snapped and
jammed throttle two thirds open (had to ride home with clutch and kill
switch), every time non-triumph mechanic opened it up the CPU logged a fault
which could only be cleared with the Triumph "Gameboy" thing, and on and on
    and on it went.

Never again .... the horror .... the horror ..... the horror .....

Luckily the UK 500s don't seem to have the alternator problem that the
bigger 650s seem to suffer from.

There wasn't as many 650s sold over here as in Aus according to the
    Aussie CX/GL forum,

Note:Some of your roads are longer than the British isles :O

    Ahhh Yes!

I'd forgotten about that... you can add that to my list of 'Triumph
    Problems' as well.

It was a right pain... locked you into dealer servicing which made
owning the thing twice as expensive.

    Easily but not cheaply.

$310 US or about $500 Australian, just so I can pay the local dealer to
service the bike instead of having to ride it 120kms to Melbourne.

Cost me $400 plus postage just over a year ago. Less than what the dealer
    charges for a major "service".

Found that the dealer had uploaded a tune for the early cams and high level
c/f pipe when mine is later cams and low c/f pipe. Had the 9860 in it, I
uploaded the 9862. Much better...I'll throw it on the dyno next time I'm in
Adelaide and get the fuel mapping tweaked too.

    Freedom isn't free... ; )
