How shit are or aren't they, 650 and 1000cc versions? Any opinions from
those who've ridden or own them welcome.

I had one... perfectly capable motorcycle, excellent headlights, good
range, reasonable engine, suprisingly good handling considering it's
size. Good tank range etc - best ride I had, coming home from a French
run on the scenic route from Dover through Sussex and then up to
Oxfordshire - brilliant. Same french trip where (IIRC) Monz found
things 'interesting' on a slippery, wet and muddy french hill and I
    just sat behind enjoying myself.

Downsides - brakes weren't great, engine management pretty rough
(stalling at roundabouts occasionally), a pig to paddle round at
times. Stock screen was terrible - aftermarket one I eventually found
    was excellent.

Biggest issues for me... I found it had no soul and it was ugly.

I still miss the GSX-R, I don't miss the V-Strom. Your mileage may
    vary :)

Bugger. And all this time I've been avoiding crossroads.

    I owned a 1000.

Really pleasant engine, very good chassis, shitty suspensions, no
    ground clearance.
High seat (I'm 1m76 and I was tip-toeing at traffic lights).
Too high and heavy to be a all rounder, and not the best tourer
    either.

I had to buy new pegs when I sold it... :)

I'll <AOL> that, it was a good bike, but a bit Honda-ish. It helped a
lot replacing the air filter with a K&N and putting a TRE on it. Gave it
a much needed dose of madness, but still topped out at 125mph which I
found frustrating, especially on French runs trying to keep up with
    people.

I didn't think it was ugly though.

That reminds me, I still have the Timing Retard Eliminator, for sale if
    you get a V-Strom 1000 that it'll fit.

    Ah, Mr Brownz!

If I may divert you to mini PC mobos and embedded boards, etc.

I got one of those bi-directional PATA to SATA adapters yesterday.
Plugged it into the Kontron EPIC/CE mobo and the lappy HDD.

Naff all. Well, less than naff all, the mobo didn't get past the BIOS
    HDD recognition bit.

Tried the adapter in a normal desktop PC and it worked fine.

    Any ideas?

I've ordered an Asus EEE B202 anyway. Decided on that rather than one of
the Atom mobos as that is the only desktop Atom based PC that uses the
mobile version of the mobo chipset, and the mobile version uses less
power (going from every review I could find) (B202 has slower GFX but
for a server IDGAF about that)

I'd just like to get this Kontron to work how I want it to, before I
chuck it back in its box again :)

I read an article a while ago on one of the bike rags and "Mossie", who's
usually a speed freeak reckons the 650 is one of the best all round bikes on
the road. Quick enough for most circumstances (Bonwicks notwithstanding)
with decent handling and a "package" that's better than the thou.

Could be bullshit though, but I'm inclined to think he may have a point.

It's actually a 650 I'm considering. The Thou is all very well but I
don't need a bike of that type that does 125mph. A 90mph cruise speed
would do me fine. I have the CBR for hooning on.

  12. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Lozzo
I keep thinking about a 650 as a winter hack, but they seem to hold
    their value too well.

Don't you already have an all-rounder with an SV650 engine?

  14. Any settings in the bios for the SATA controller that resemble - Native /
    Legacy / AHCI / RAID ?

If there is, try setting it to legacy whilst using the adapter.

As a rule of thumb, I try to avoid anything that converts one standard to
    another like the plague.

I want something more upright with a fairing. I had thought about
Bandits, but BTDT, want something different.
